Anyone at SUNY New Paltz? Anyone transfer there and have some words of advice? My son is thinking of transferring there from University of Miami....I know, totally opposite schools, but I think that is the idea. The hot weather and superficial people have gotten to him. He is more of a long haired, music loving, guitar playing, laid back kinda guy.

Lily, I know of someone who has a son there and he LOVES it. It sounded like everyone was very welcoming and respectful of all types of groups of people. There are more girls than guys which he liked. His mother described it to me as exactly what your last line was in your post! This kid is also very laid back. I asked her recently about the town and apparently you can walk to it from the campus. It seemed like there were a lot of cute one of a kind shops and restaurants along with some chains and either possibly a Walmart or Target (or something of that type) on the edge of the town. It sounded great to me. Good luck to your son.

I don't know about Suny New Paltz, but we were in that area fairly recently for a day of wine tasting. It was a lot of fun. It seems like a really nice area and very scenic in the fall.

Thanks for your input. He is driving me a little crazy cause he is saying he will miss some of the people he has met at Miami and he doesn't want to make a mistake. He is I think a little overwhelmed with this decision. I want to help guide him to make the right choice and he keeps going back and forth with it.

Why not suggest that he apply and make the final decision if and when he is accepted? Is New Paltz the only place that he is considering? Is it in state for him?

The theater and arts offering there is excellent, so whether or not he takes coursework there, he can enjoy seeing fine college productions, gallery exhibits, crafts shops, and so on.

On weekends, NYC is a doable day-trip by public bus, if he wakes up early enough.

Hudson River Valley is beautiful. The town of New Paltz is fun and artistic.

If he'll have a car, talk seriously with him about winter driving and ice; it's seriously different compared to driving in Florida. Must be sensible.

twinmom, yes, New Paltz is the only school he is considering and it is in state for him. He is interested in NP because:

It's not that far from home and he can come home on a weekend if he wants
The artsy and laid back reputation
It has a good communications/media dept. which is one of his majors
He's pretty confident he will be accepted there

Thanks, paying3tuitions, now I have his driving in the ice to worry about, since yes he will have a car! Yikes!

I'm actually in favor of New Paltz over other SUNYs for my kids because of the low latitude! With global warming and all, I don't think there will be too many icy days. Heard so many good things about Buffalo, but I get cold thinking about it!!!

Muffy, I have heard mixed reviews about Buffalo, but it seems to be one of the more liked Sunys. I have heard about transportation problems, large classes which happen on many large campuses, but lots of professors who cannot be understood because of language barriers.

I really liked the surrounding New Paltz area. We were recently in Oneonta, and that area is not bad either. The shops and places all look like they needed a facelift 20 years ago, but at least it is not isolating. The New Paltz area is very scenic, but we really did not go into their business area. We were there to go to the wineries, just look at the countryside and enjoy the beautiful autumn leaves. I need to make to the Mohonk Mountain House sometime. I never seem to get there....sigh....

one of my S's friends is now a junior at New Paltz although not a transfer so no advice on that. She's laid back, artsy (photog) and a little quirky. She enjoys it there. It has a rep here on Long Island as a SUNY branch that attracts the artsy type kids who arent quite artsy enough for Purchase..where the music/dance kids go.Easy commuting to the metro NYC area, not as much angst when the weathers bad and the kids in Buffalo get stuck not being able to fly ,and a much smaller campus than the University centers in Buffalo,Albany, etc. The area is cute from an adult perspective,I can see it maybe getting "old" from a students perspective but if he'll have a car he'll be ok.If he's a native NY'er he probably knows how to drivw on snow already and they're pretty good about clearing roads, etc in the Catskills.

I thought New Paltz was "artsier" than Purchase - is New Paltz better for visual arts? I don't think my daughter would get into "art school" with a portfolio and I'm not sure if there would be any point to going to Purchase to major in English or something, but I really like the Purchase location.

Muffy..by "artsier" I meant the kids who are into their creative medium as a major..be it music or dance or drama, etc.
New Paltz kids seem more well rounded with an artistic flair .....

Okay, so generally, there are mostly "artists" at Purchase but New Paltz students are "artsier" than other SUNYs. That's always been my impression. Is that right?

I have tried to ask the administration here at CC to add New Paltz to the list of colleges, but to no avail. It would be great to be able to speak to other kids and parents of kids who are students there. If anyone is interested in having a NP forum, could you send a messgae to CC and ask? The more people who do, the more chance it may happen.

It would be nice to have NP listed. There are so many schools not listed. Other than Rutgers, NJ state schools are not listed. Do schools pay to be listed?

New Paltz-- Great school, great area. Communication dept is very good and the art department is phenomenal. The President of the college is very down to earth. Older d. graduated there and had a fantastic experience.

Stumbled onto this thread. Am happy to learn a little more about New Paltz. I was another who thought of Purchase as the arty SUNY. Good to know. Hope there will be some more input. Our neighbor transferred from Reed to Purchase, and ended up being very happy there (also an artistic type - though more into lit and writing, I think).
