Anyone got questions

Where is the best off-campus apartment place to be, in the event there’s no on-campus housing?

sorry can’t be of a huge help here since i am on campus but i checked out clover village (i was thinking about moving off) and clover’s village looked like a pretty nice place - not too far from campus, not too loud, and i think it is pretty cheap - also at this point a lot of places are probably full already though

Hey Hawkswim my S is an engineering major and he took the first physics this spring. He says the class is available every semester.

Yes the physics for engineers (PHYS 10310) if offered in the fall - i just took that one as well — the physics for the architecture majors (PHYS 10111) is only offered in the fall ---- the major difference is a lab - but it is still considered a different class - i don’t know if the architecture school would accept PHYS 10310 instead - that is something you would have to ask them - but i definitely could not use PHYS 10111 instead of PHYS 10310 so I don’t know how that would work

now for both engineering AND architecture you could do

Intro to Engineering
Architectural Drawing
Chemistry
Math
Physics for Architecture majors

though you have to fit either FYC or a seminar in there so that is impossible ---- unless you have credit for FYC

also…all seminars still have space for anyone who has not turned in their sheet yet…

Question about the housing applicaiton for entering freshman. Since off the waitlist and missed deadline, the office of residence life says “they accepted” the application on behalf of the student but nothing was ever filled out. Isn’t there a questionnaire as to habits, likes/dislikes etc, or is it so random they ask nothing about you at all before chosing your roomate?

They ask nothing – it is 100% random - or so we are told - there are certain things that they do and some ways to beat the system — but technically it is 100% random.

Getting a little anxious over the whole waiting game for transfer housing. Keeping fingers crossed that son gets a room but if not, where and when do you think it is advisable to find a place off-campus?? We’re in MA and no idea of where is the closest place available and how it all works. Can anyone advise what to do?

Thanks very much!!

I was in a similar bind because I was trying to find a roommate right before we had to pick rooms and therefore, I had started looking into off-campus apartments and the like.

What I did was I started to look around the South Bend area and started calling places (Clover Village, Clover Ridge, Ivy Quad, Irish Row and I know there are more but I really don’t know). I checked in almost daily for their availability and at one point had a deal to put 200 down to hold the particular room for a week - I eventually did not need to, but it was a tactic that I used - I really was nice and made a good relationship. Also, if you can contact ND and find people in the same situation, then maybe a 2 bedroom apartment maybe easier to find right now.

Other than that I don’t know much in terms of transfers and my one transfer friend lived in South Bend so it was not a problem and he actually got housing in O’Neill.

The following seminars are full:

ANTH 13181-03
ECON 13181-02
PHIL 13185-03

Stop me if everyone has already filled out their form - but i figured if they have not been required to be in yet, I would give everyone a heads up.

Also the link will let you look up your classes and view your books for next year: https://was.nd.edu/reg/srch/ClassSearchServlet</a>.

Questions? ASK!!! - I know you all have questions so don’t be afraid to ask.

Does anyone know if ND has Musicals that students that are not majoring in theatre can audition in? Also what can a female student that loves to sing participate in? Thanks!

How much free time do you have and what do you do during it? Is it popular for people to be paying ultimate frisbee and football out on the fields?

hey my fin. aid statement was put up today on insidend. But… did anyone else get a healthy increase in the amount of work study and subsidized stafford loan offered in place of grants?

ndfan, there are plenty of people out on the quads if it’s warm (which is not so uncommon as one would think with south bend’s infamous weather). I saw people playing frisbee almost everyday on north quad towards the end of spring sem.

tiredofwaiting - i am almost positive that there are opportunities for theatre if you are not majoring in theatre - i know an architecture student that was in a play - i don’t know the actual details, but from what I have observed from the outside it seems possible. Also the Film, Television and Theatre department does allow people to have it as a second major - and if i remember correctly you can even just take a class in it if you have the space. As for singing - there are a number of choirs you should join - there are the ones that sing at masses, etc. I know there are a ton of clubs that sing on campus in choir settings.

https://www3.nd.edu/~sao/studentgroups/listing/alphalist.shtml</a> - a list of all clubs - maybe search through them - i know it is long though

NDfan41 - yes there are plenty of games out on the quad that happen - i would say for about the first month or so and then every saturday until football is over - granted this happens to be due to weather but also after a month homework starts to really start pilling up for everyone which limits a lot of free time - then kind of the reverse happens in the fall as everyone gets anxious for school to end and starts to wander out and enjoy some nice weather finally - but yes i would advise bringing a ball (make sure you have your name on it) and maybe a frisbee or two - and maybe a baseball glove, if you have one etc. You don’t need anything, but it helps when everyone will go outside to at least have some equipment.

bamboosoul - sorry i can’t help you there - here is some contact info for financial aid though,

Can you talk about the drinking scene at ND. I don’t drink at all, and I don’t want that to ruin my social life, and I don’t want to feel forced to drink in order to “fit in.”

Compared to most campuses I would say that the amount of drinking is fairly average. Most of the drinking that takes place is done on the weekends. Most people drink casually but some love to indulge and drink to the point of intoxication. As some people like to say, study hard and party harder. Sadly this often makes otherwise good people look like nuisances but I guess that’s life which you see on every college campus. The great thing about ND though is that you won’t see a whole lot of pressure to drink if you do not want to. Everybody is pretty accepting and they could care less if you chose pepsi over naty light. Other people on the forum might have other experiences but I honestly never had a problem with the drinking scene.

From what I have heard, ND is very mild in terms of drinking than other colleges, though in general it seems to be accepted on campus – other things like drugs and sex are taken a lot more seriously as I know of one occurrence when one individual was smoking an illegal substance and was suspended for the semester in a couple of days. You will not see this at all with drinking – if you get caught then it is probably just a fine (though depends on your dorm) — if you get caught off campus or doing something crazy outside a dorm, then that is probably a ResLife, though you get three before you are kicked off campus I believe (though after each your parents get a letter i think) … that being said, if you go to a party there will be alcohol unless it is a school sponsored event. Other than only going to events sponsored by the school, you are not going to avoid it … that being said, you don’t have to drink if you don’t want to (I didn’t my freshmen year) … however, you will more than likely be offered one on multiple occasions and you won’t be forced but it will be recommended (and the longer you are there and the more drunk your friends get the more and more they offer lol) … but overall it is not a thing where it is forced upon you — there may be events (especially after freshmen orientation) where alcohol is definitely around so maybe this a time to avoid these types of parties.

However, drinking, for the most part, only occurs on friday and saturday nights (some of the more extreme people continue to drink on other days but they are rare) … however, for special dorm events and special weeks drinking occurs during the week — it also occurs on certain days (like Saint Patrick’s Day for example).

However, partying occurs at every college and it is very prevalent at all colleges - so don’t second guess your decision because there is drinking - you couldn’t avoid it when selecting a college (unless you limit your colleges to a handful and that may be generous) … it is a part of college that people enjoy but at ND is not like you are forced to drink.

If anyone wants to add to this, feel free — if any freshmen wants to discuss further, reply or PM me if it is more private …
