It might not be a bad idea. Are you planning on doing anything really CPU intensive, like gaming?

^

Not really.
Probably a little FF8 here and there.

I want to get the laptop ASAP because I know my professors are going to bombard us with a ton of information.

OT: Are there any video cards on the market that support 8-bit paletted textures?

You should be fine.

I think any OpenGL/DX10-compliant card will be able to handle it.

UCLAri, if it's not too much trouble can you send me a page of notes (doesn't matter what class) just so I know how you structured it. I don't know what's the best way to take notes for a place like UCLA.

nikkei,

I don't have anything for undergrad anymore, but I'll dig up something for grad ASAP. Should be about the same, really.

I have a Dell and I can attest for its build quality. My friend bought a MacBook, and he loves it too. I prefer the Dell for the better components for the cheaper price (I have Intel Core 2 Duo and a dedicated graphics card) while he gets slightly better build quality for the price but slower components.

modernfuturist,

Don't discount the "extras." The built in cam, slot loaded drive, and Mac OS X are definitely important to factor into any marginal analysis.

But yes, a good Dell can be a good computer.

Oh well in that case the Mac also has a smaller screen as well. 13.3' if you can live with it.

But Core 2 Duo is definitely faster than Core Duo but not many people will notice it. I just got it for the sake of future proofing myself and being ready for Vista and anything else down the road.

^

Are the Macbooks Vista ready?

nikkei,

Yes.

modernfuturist,

I actually tend to err on the size of smaller screens. In my opinion, the newer lines of 21" laptops with a RAID array built-in are neat, but they also weigh upwards of a pack of elephants. What's the point? Get a desktop.

Apples are usually 10 percent off and you don't even have to do it through the college. If you go to the apple store with your BruinCard, they'll discount it. The dell one you have to go through this 3rd party site that sponsors UCLA. Here's the link:

Awesomeness!
I'm going to see if I can still do this.
I'll check out the one at Third Street Promenade.

you dont have to do it through a third party website for dell either. just goto www.dell.com/epp and select "higher education facility. students and staff"

Final Fantasy VIII for the PC... heh, good times.

Awesome!
This makes me want a Macbook even more!

uh...if it'll tip you over, i personally love my mbp very, very, very much. :D

i love my white macbook.

and my sister love hers.

Ahhh!!!
Tomorrow is the big day!
I'm heading back to Orange County tomorrow so I can get a lower tax advantage. :P

UCLAri,

Does your Macbook Pro intermittently shut down?
How long have you owned it for?
Ugh, why did the Macbook have to start having problems now?
Now I don't know what kind of laptop I want anymore.

nikkei,

I have no problems with mine at all. Not one.

You might want to take it in. Apple will fix/replace it quite quickly.

^

Eh, I didn't jump on it yet.
I'm still undecided at this point.
Some guy just told me that the Macbooks being sold today do not have the RSS (Random Shutdown Syndrome), but I am still skeptical.
Desktop, FTW!
