I'll be a freshman next year at michigan state and I'm not liking the idea of out of state tuition because i'll probably end up taking a lot of loans out for it.

There policy seems kinda ehhh, like its possible to switch but it's not really clear. I do intend to stay in michigan though, during summers and even after graduation. I read that you can get a refund for the difference for the last year if you take a fulltime job in MI. That will help but, it still seems quite substantial with the price of private loans.

As long as you are a dependent student and you will be a dependent student unless one of the following applies:

You are 24 years old
you have completed a first bachelors degree
you are married
you are in (or have served in) the armed forces
you have a child for whom you provide more than 1/2 their support
you were a ward of the court before age 18.

You will be a resident wherever your parents reside.

You cannot get state residency for the sole purpose of attending college.

It also says this though

following facts and circumstances, although not necessarily conclusive, have probative value in support of a claim for in-state classification: 1) continuous presence in Michigan during periods when not enrolled as a student; 2) reliance upon Michigan sources for financial support;

The best way to find out for sure is to speak to a finaid person at the school. But how will your conversation start "I'm an OOS student and I'm now concerned that this is a huge amount of money to spend. I would like to know how I can establish instate residency."

The reality is that you knew the costs of OOS fees prior to applying AND you still have time to decide whether this is where you will matriculate or not.

I'm quite sure that most students who are OOS would rather pay the instate tuition costs as they are less. BUT it's not usually easy to establish instate residency WHILE you are enrolled at the college.

I interpret the above quote from your post as meaning that your primary means of supporting yourself would be EARNED INCOME (not money from scholarships from the college or work study) that you earn while working in Michigan. In other words, you would need to earn enough money IN Michigan to support all of your living expenses AND your college expenses. Most full time students cannot do this. If they could, they wouldn't need financial aid:)

thanks a lot.

i figured i'd ask, couldn't hurt.
