Becoming A Michigan Resident *Please Help!*

First off I would like to say sorry for the long post. I am a bit frantic right now because me going to college may depend on this. Also if this is in the wrong forum feel free to move it. Please help me out!

I currently live in Illinois and I will most likely attend Michigan State next year as a freshman. My parents said that they could put me through one year of college, but they are unsure about the next 3 years. I was thinking about becoming a Michigan resident. What is the easiest way I could become a resident. I would like to be a student so working full time would not work out. My parents can't buy a lake house there either because we don't have any money. I heard that if you become a student in Michigan and get a Michigan driver's license it may count towards being a resident. (this may be a rumor). Does anyone know of any loopholes in declaring residency in Michigan? Do they have any agreements with any other states? All help is much appreciated

You cannot establish residency as an instate student WHILE you are living in Michigan to attend college. In other words…you cannot go to college there as a freshman and just get a MI driver’s license, and register to vote and become a resident. If it were THAT easy…everyone who is an out of state resident would do that.

The way for you to become a Michigan resident is for your FAMILY (that includes your parents) to move there. Even with that…you would not have instate status for your freshman year. Your family including your parents, would need to reside in Michigan for one full year to establish YOUR residency there.

For undergrads…the place of residency is the place where your PARENTS reside. It is not easy to get in state status for tuition purposes if your parent reside in another state.

I think you KNOW that you are a resident of Illinois…and you are entitled to instate tuition there…not in Michigan.

You can check the policies of the state of Michigan…perhaps there is some leeway…but I do not believe there is.

[MSU RO: Out-Of-State Tuition Regulations](<a href=“MSU RO: Error 404: Web Page Not Found”>MSU RO: Regulations for Qualifying for In-State Tuition)

5 seconds to google this

I already saw that. I was mainly looking for other suggestions. Such any loopholes or what others have done.

There are no loopholes to getting instate status for residency. MSU has a policy…and that is that.

When I was going to college twenty years ago there were people who swore all a person had to do was get a drivers licsence and register to vote. Or rent an apartment. Or whatnot. I had a few friends that had to drop out when the college did not “honor” the loophole they thought they had found to recieve in-state tuition.

The taxpayers take this issue very seriously. So do the colleges. Read the policy on the website. Abide by it. That’s all you can do.
