Anyone have thoughts on Carneigie Mellon for cello or composition

We have not visited yet but are thinking of going to take a look. Anyone know much the atmosphere of level of play at this school? Thanks.

We know one family who had a pre-college student there in cello, and they thought very highly of the whole CMU program, and their student is going to be attending a famous conservatory, and another family whose student opted out of a famous conservatory to go to CMU. My D’s teacher says the teachers are all well-respected and well-known there, across the board. The website has a way to register and log in to view a whole bunch of recorded recitals:

I can’t speak to the music level at CMU, but my D4 just returned from their 6-week precollege summer acting program and she loved the atmosphere of the campus. It’s a beautiful urban campus, one of the nicest I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot of campuses. Although I live in Pennsylvania, I’ve never been to Pittsburgh before and was very pleasantly impressed by the city and the CMU/Pitt campus environment.

Check out Cellofourte - three of the members came out of CMU’s music program:

My daughter has studied with both cello and composition majors at CMU - and both sets of students have been really happy at CMU. The composition department is collaborative and the cello world really dynamic. CMU is beautiful campus and the Fine Arts building one of the loveliest I’ve seen. Students are friendly and helpful. The whole music school has a strong tech side, which makes sense given it is part of a very science focused school. However a drawback is the lack of scholarship money at CMU, not just for music but all departments.

Cellofourte is now cello fury, btw (my daugher studied with Nicole): [Untitled Document](http://www.cellofury.com)
