Carnegie Mellon Vocal program info??

D, who is a senior, has added CM to her 'final' college list , which includes:

Rice
Northwestern
U of Michigan
Florida State
Indiana University

I would love to hear opinions from this board as to how their VP program stacks up to the others mentioned above....

thanks

CMU has had teachers leave the program in recent years. It is a good program. Though it is almost certainly at the bottom of your list of schools (from our experience and research anyway).

this is what I am thinking by what I have read on this board…but D (who has a friend that attends engineering program there and loves it) seems to have it on her list.

I sure hate to spend the time & $$ to audition there if it is on the bottom of choices…

CMU spends the bulk of its money and attention on their MT program as opposed to VP. The former is excellent, the latter has paid the price over the past few years…
As an engineering school, its near the top though!

Went to go see my friend in the undergrad opera scenes program there last year for juniors and seniors. Haha I thought I had accidentally stepped into a high school chorus scenes concert. Maybe it’s right for some people but I can’t really imagine it being on the same list as those schools you have above.

I am still trying to get a feeling for the level of play amonst the string players and the orchestra at this school. Does anyone happen to know? Does any one know what level of school it might compare to? We visited and asked a lot of questions and we are still not sure. They very good faculty and my son is going to apply but we cannot quite get a handle on this school.

thanks to all the answers…this was my thought as well, but D needed to hear it from others…

The cello department and the composition department are very strong. Leonardo Balada, the composition head is a wonderful man and his work is very good.

OTOH, I have heard students from MT who were totally competitive in opera world. Good teaching is good teaching. They are advertising for two new voice teachers there for next year.
