@metaldad. Thanks for the info. I was given the impression from an e-mail that maybe they hadn’t all gone out but obviously that information as incorrect. Our D had 1440 SAT, 33 ACT and 4.6 WGPA. We figured it was a long shot, but one can always hope. Ironically she wasn’t even all that interested in USC until accepted into HOnors College in Dec. and we visited just last week. Now she loves the school, but we shall see.

My son had ACT 32/ 4.83 WGPA, was hoping the GPA would overcome the Act 32, he also was accepted into the honors in December, hoping now for the Cooper or Mckissick, we also have a free ride at Alabama not including room and board though.

SAT 2220 and WGPA 4.88 plus all of the other stuff; NMSF (hopefully a F), AP with Dist. (9 AP’s), 6 V letters, 4 as Captain, founder/pres. of club at school, and lots of volunteer and work hours. Also a SF in the Morehead-Cain and Jefferson. Kind of surprised that a Fed Ex didn’t come but that just makes it easier to decide which school to attend.

Best of luck to those of you that received letters and hopefully the rest of you will get great scholarships! The Honors College really does sound like a wonderful experience and if I remember correctly, everyone that got into the Honors College will get some sort of award.

Turtlelover is correct. Last year, every incoming freshman to the Honors College received a four-year merit scholarship. For example, every incoming freshman from out-of-state was awarded in-state tuition @$9,768 a year + at least a Cooper Scholarship @4,000 a year. Hopefully, the same will be true in 2012. Also, the conversation Metaldad’s wife had with Admissions is consistent with my 1/29 post that, “I am not entirely certain, but reasonably confident that at least two [McNair Scholar Candidates] have to decline in order for additional students to be invited; that is, USC wants at least 40 students to participate in the weekend.”

Well I just got this email so I dunno, I’m gunna keep being optimistic… xD

Apparently I’m not supposed to to copy and past the email but he said that the McNair decisions BEGAN to go out on friday and that all letters should be sent out by the end of THIS WEEK.

Holy CRAP, if turtlelover’s kid doesn’t get one, mine doesn’t have an ice cube’s chance in hell!!

@CFitzRN - my thoughts exactly and thanks for the chuckle. I needed it. First time thru with the college search/app process and all I can say is I need more wine!!!

AMEN, friend! haha

Keeping one eye open for FedEx, but every passing day seems less likely. D has decent ACT and GPA, and some ec activities but probably the bar is set too high. We did get invited to the McNair Info dinner… I looked back at the profile of 2010 winners posted on sc.edu , really impressive. Maybe Mkissick or Cooper are in order (out of stater). Does anyone know if accepted into Honors College assures some sort of scholarship or in-state rates?
THANKS

I do believe that everyone accepted into the Honors College receives -at the very least- in-state tuition. That is where our hope is lying now…

I have heard that out-of-state Honors College students do receive in-state tuition and some other type of scholarship as well - Cooper? At this point we are hoping that is the case. Wish we would hear before mid-March so the decision could be made one way or the other.

If this year is the same as last year, all out-of-state Honors College students will receive in-state tuition and a $4,000 a year Cooper.

if i get into the honors college, i will throw the biggest party ever and you all can come.

LOL pb - I’ll bring the cupcakes!!

FedEx truck just came . . . with a package from WalMart. (Since when does WalMart deliver by FedEx!!?!) We were hoping S would get a shot at McNair, w/2280 & 3/600, and clear, steady interest in Carolina . . .

I feel your pain. The Fed Ex drove around our circle yesterday. But rather than coming to our house with the coveted McNair invite, he passed us by and delivered a big box to our neighbor. He sells breast implants. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Our D loves USC and we are very hopeful that somehow we can work it out. Congrats to all of those who did get invited for the McNair weekend!

Nope, no fedex today. and the only way i can go out of state is if I can get some big financial aid. :/

I thought more McNair scholars would be on CC but i guess its not many people so chances of them being on CC are not that high.

Hi! I was chosen as a McNair finalist and got my letter the last week of January. @neorobie I am from Pennsylvania, about an hour outside of Philly. @metaldad I had a 2270 SAT and a 4.34 weighted GPA. By the time I graduate I will have taken 10 APs. My extracurriculars weren’t out of this world, so I was pretty surprised to receive the McNair letter. I think my essays may have helped me a lot.

When I talked to a woman at USC the other day, she told me that attending the weekend at the end of Feb. is required in order to be eligible for McNair. She said that anyone who cannot attend will be replaced by the runner-ups for the scholarship.

To anybody who has gone to the McNair weekend: Could you tell me a bit about your interview? Was it high-stress or more laid back? Is the panel nice or intimidating? I am exciting but nervous!

College Girl- Congrats! Look around on CC. I am pretty certain that I read someone’s account of the weekend. If I remember correctly it was a fun relatively low stress weekend. Just by showing up, you are already a finalist and will qualify for like $11K. If you are a winner then you will get like an additional $4K. Have a great time!

That’s right. By being invited and attending you are a finalist and receive $11,000 year. May also get instate tuition on top of that. There’s not much difference in being finalist and winner $4000 year and a few dinners and receptions. If like Carolina scholar (instate), finalists also receive priority housing and parking and a computer. Don’t forget that USC is generous on stacking scholarships. My child also added Leiber which is automatic for national merit finalist and I think is $6000 for OOS. My child was at Carolina scholar competition and ended up finalist and attending. Many other students she met, she also saw at other scholarship competitions and many of these are now her best friends at USC…it’s a great opportunity. Have a great time and relax, you’re already a winner.
