I heard (from other CC posts) that the tier program didn’t apply to impacted programs. (We were told by our tour guide at CPP last weekend that only 80 or so new freshman were accepted into the four impacted programs.) Also that CPP is becoming more competitive (like other CA schools) and moving towards getting away from the tier system altogether.

According to president Ortiz, Cal Poly Pomona is moving away from the Tier system starting this year. I believe a CSU has the right to deny acceptance regardless of minimum CSU requirements. Look at Cal Poly SLO. They don’t even use minimum CSU eligibility for their local students. Personally, I think this is a move in the right direction. Someone with a 3.0 and an 800 on the SAT probably needs remediation which they cant get at their local CC rather than use scarce resources at CPP, regardless of where they live.

Gotoplay2,

I think those tour guides have been giving misleading information. Mechanical Engineering took in close to 1,000 (73%) applicant’s last year and civil over 400(54%). Architecture accepted 27 percent of applicants, which is the lowest last year, but were down to 17% the previous year. It will do doubt be tougher this year, but not down to 80 for mechanical.

I already registered for PCC on April 1st… Thats is going to be my back up If cal poly denies me. Or probably Cal State LA idk yet.

Ah thanks. Im nervous because I have attended a few places so my gpa is really hard to determine. I know its not as competitive as it should be so I was relying on being at tier schools to help me =/

I also applied to the fashion program !
I’m so sad and nervous because I didnt think it was gonna be this hard to get in especially since its not impacted.

JL2688, are you a transfer student or ftf ?

egmontus: Thanks for that info - I know that CPP hasn’t been highly selective in the past, but I thought maybe this year - given the budget situation - things may have changed significantly ? IDK - would LOVE to know what the numbers look like for the fall… Any idea when they’ll post that info? I agree that the move to raise the bar for eligibility will be good for CPP.

(I saw the 2010 total figures from the website you referenced - just wondering how it will break down by major.)

They won’t post for about another year. One thing that is getting everybody confused is the difference between admitted and enrolled students. Cal Poly Pomona will probably accept over 10k students this year and will aim to enroll about 3k out of the total 27k applicants. Of course, not all admits will enroll, especially when you consider all the applicants that had CPP as their safety. Architecture admits about 250 students every year out of the more than one thousand that apply, but only about 100 will enroll. The rest will probably go to SLO, USC and Berkeley. I think the CPP admin is to blame for the confusion. Even president Ortiz has said CPP will admit 3k, when he really meant “enroll”.

Any idea what the Animal Science numbers look like? That’s one of the impacted majors too.

First one on the list:

687 applicants 327 accepted, 47.6 percent for entering class of Fall 2009.

You yanks are pampered here jk lol. No, but seriously, a university like Cal Poly Pomona has it all! Beautiful weather, women, food, nice studying environment. If we had a university like that in the UK, it’d be at the top of the rankings. Even with the budget cuts, and increase in fees, it’s still pretty cool down there. lol I hope I’ll see you there in the fall!

Ok4ever. Omg! Yay everyone here has been enginering, so glad I’m not alone. I am a transfer student. I did the whole fidm thing and it just didn’t work for me. I applied to long beach last yr but didn’t get over a technicality type thing. I applied again this yr and to poly as my backup.
I am shocked to cause let’s be honest, fashion isn’t cpp’s strong suite. I am trying to stay hopeful tho. Did you go to the open house? There was hardly anybody there so I am hopping it’s a sign that there was a small pool of applicants. So are you Ftf and are you doing merch or managment?

JL2688, Yea almost all of these posts are from someone trying to get into some kind of engineering or Architecture… or animal science. Do you know of anyone who has been accepted to the fashion program ?
I did not go to open house because I missed the sign up deadline. How was it ? Did you get to talk to anyone about the program ?
Im also a transfer student and I honestly do not remember what I put on my app but I think it was Merchandising. As I read more into merchandising I like it more and more. Yea, fidm is pretty expensive. I tried going there after high school.
Why didnt it work out for you ? just curious, was it not all that great ?

Im trying to stay positive as well. I really want to attend poly. I hope we get it !!! =]

Ok4ever I don’t know anybody there. The open house was nice but there was maybe a max of 20 people. They had different people presenting to us to show the types of classes and projects they have. I got the impression that it’s a really small number of students and that it’s very close knit.
Fidm didn’t work for me for aloooot of reasons. I felt the teachers didn’t honestly care about the students. Many of them liked to tell us students on a reg basis that we would “never make it in the bussiness or wherent determined and dedicated enough” if we screwed upon on project or even if we just showed up a little late. I found many of the students unfriendly and jugemental. Also because of the redicuosly large class load, there was soooo much cheating and professors would often turn a blind eye even tho it was sometimes fairly blateint. Their job center that they brag so much about to prospective students sucks. I’ve interned three different places and I found them all without them because they told me I wasn’t ready yet and I should just work retail. That and many more scary stories are why I left. I’ve met other people who had a great time there and love fidm so idk. Sincerly don’t recomend it. It’s been such a headache trying to transfer since a good percentage of their courses dont transfer(something they assured me wouldn’t happen)
annyways, where are you transfering from? Have you taken any fashion classes before?

It has been a long time already. CPP hasn’t sent anything to the eligiable to consideration students. Ahh! I don’t want to wait forever. Yesterday I called Admissions and a nice lady answer the phone, I asked her of WHEN were they going to send the notifications to the eligiable for consideration studetns and She said that they will be sending the notifications this friday to check or for sure next tues. But ahh Idk they say something and keep us waiting.

Has anybody put as a major on Journalism?

That’s interesting Rxxx. I called the school last Thursday. They told me I should learn my status by the next day (Friday) or Monday. Its Wednesday and I still have NO answer. I rather them be up front when it comes to when we will be notified

I’m transfering from elac with some credits from other institutions, and yourself ? I have never taken any courses related to fashion. Only business courses and my general Ed. I had no idea poly had this program until recently so I was pretty excited. I’m so tired of waiting it seems like even the admissions staff doesn’t know what’s going on. I’m really getting ticked off…

@JL2688 Yeah, I know. It seems like they don’t even know what they are telling us. Because they change their answers each time.
Is this the school that you WANT to get in or is it just a backup?

JL2688,

What are your stats? Fashion Merchandising should be a relatively safe program. The average for the college of Ag last year was a H.S. gpa of 3.46 and and SAT of 1045. Transfers had a GPA of 3.08. Minus the impacted Animal Science applicants, should make the Fashion numbers a bit lower. If you had anything above these stats, you should be safe this year, even with stricter admissions this year. If you’re at or below them, you may have something to worry about.

By the way, CPP enrolled close to 4,500 FTF and Transfer students last year, and president Ortiz just mentioned that they will aim for 3,000 this year. That’s roughly a third less.
