Anyone heard of New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology?

Needless to say, I'm interested in their Geology program.

Just wondering if anyone's heard of it before, as I've had family that has worked there and is recommending it...

How's the prestige? I'm on the East coast and none of my friends have even heard of it.

While it seems cheap and easy to get into, it seems like it does challenge its students quite a bit.

I'm pretty lost ?_?

Yes, I’ve heard of it. It’s a good program.

Have you considered Colorado School of Mines…it’s better known.

So I’ve heard (about mines).

My only reservation about them is that it looks like it’d be ~$40K per year (double NMT), all things considered.

I still have 2 years to go (transfer), so looking down the road, do you think a Mines education is worth $40K more than a NMT one?

I’ve heard New Mexico Tech is great - it actually has a high rate of students going on for PHD - 15th place for % of bachelor’s students getting phd’s <9 years later

Now sure how Geology depts would rank. I see for grad programs, USNWR ranks NMT - 45, Mines: 25. Most people have not heard of either school - but graduate schools and people in the field will know them very well.
NMT is kind of in the middle of nowhere though. Can’t really answer your question. I would say if the $40,000 causes hardship, then no (unless you like NMT better)

That did not come out right - If you strongly prefer Mines, it would be worth it, UNLESS it causes hardship (loans, etc)

*I still have 2 years to go (transfer), so looking down the road, do you think a Mines education is worth $40K more than a NMT one? *

Oh…I didn’t realize that you were a transfer student and therefore less likely to get any decent merit to reduce cost.

NM is fine then…unless you have a better, more affordable option in your own state.

What is your budget? How will you be paying for those 2 years?

How much would you be borrowing?

How much would you likely be earning with a Geology degree???

Well right now, I’m deciding between:

Rutgers: In-state, cheap, excellent overall school, mediocre program
Hawai’i: Far, cheap, mediocre school, good program
Arizona: Not as far, expensive, good school, excellent program

And now I’m thinking, maybe I should consider a more specialized school. All of these schools have their pros/cons, but I think Arizona is out due to the price…

On one hand, Rutgers is extremely cheap and close to home (friends and family), but the program is nothing special, really.

Hawai’i is extremely far away, but only a little more expensive. Their program is better known and would offer me unmatched hands-on experience. But again, it’s so far. I’d be seeing everyone every back in NJ MAYBE once a year…

And I know I shouldn’t put too much weight into this, but the climate/atmosphere of Hawai’i is very preferable. I spent some time at UMiami and loved the area, but unfortunately, the school didn’t live up to my expectations. The so-called “geology department” was in a closet… in the basement of the science building… I kid you not.

Now, NMT would be about the same price as Rutgers (surprisingly), but again, my concern lies with its respectability in the field. Sure, it has the name, but what separates it from UTEP? I’m not too sure how I’d do in a small school like that (< 2000 enrollment!) and the town is kind of scaring me off… but if it’s THAT good of a school, I guess these are all things that could be overlooked.

I would plan on going for a master’s degree afterwards and wouldn’t need to take out loans until then (unless I chose Arizona). How much I make at that point would be anyone’s guess. I couldn’t begin to speculate… between $40 and $60K out of the gate maybe? lol

I remember Mythbusters did some testing at the school.

Sorry, that’s probably not that helpful, but I thought it was interesting.
