I feel the same way as you. Even if I don’t become a doctor, I’d still want to have an influence in medicine through scientific research.

@awakeningvenus That’s exactly how I feel. I know that no matter what I do, I want to make an impact in the medical field in some way, shape, or form.

@deTURMANed22
That’s half of the reason that I’ve started getting really interested in microbiology recently. Just looking up mitochondria, for example. Mitochondrial DNA inheritance is a potential cause for so many diseases. (I could go on a rant about it, honestly. I’m planning to make mtDNA a focus for my next year’s science fair project.)

There is so much room for scientific discovery in the medical field. Did you hear about the student that found a paper-based diagnostic for pancreatic cancer? It’s even more amazing to think that there are high school students my age that are making an influence already!

@awakeningvenus What’s more, the same kid said that before he started his science fair project, he didn’t even know what a pancreas was! It’s crazy to think how people have so much potential at their finger tips.

@dfafd2dfafd
Seriously? I didn’t even know that. I personally love the idea of Science Fair because it brings out potential like that from young people. It makes me really, really want to work hard and commit my time to science, even if I’m just a high schooler.

Why would I want to do that? Doctor and lawyer are two very different jobs; if you want to be both of those it’s probably because your parents are forcing that into your brain.

@sammo3

You really should consider your career on interest first, and financial security as a follow up question. What’s the point of making big bucks if you hate your career for 30-40 years? Find things you enjoy, then pick the safest financial option from that list.

Malpractice insurance, depending on your state and specialty, may be ridiculous expensive or not an issue. I pay roughly $12,000 for mine per year. It really isn’t that bad. I’ve been practicing for over 10 years and have had no lawsuits! Fighting with the private insurance companies are a much bigger issue than my malpractice. I wouldn’t let that dissuade you. We need more doctors. Someone has to take care of me when I get sick!

There was a time period where I did want to be a lawyer. There was also a time that I wanted to be a graphic designer. Now I want to go into biological research. The problem with focusing on interest is the fact that people can be so fickle sometimes. (I’m definitely going into biological research.)

I love mock trial, I love reading about law, I love talking about law. My ideal job would be public defender. But honestly, the job market for lawyers right now is just so discouraging. I’m still in hs, so my plans could change… We’ll see.

Doctors and Lawyers are WAY different occupations.
I love arguments. I wanna be a civil/human rights lawyer. I wouldn’t mind representing the NAACP or ACLU in cases. Marriage equality would be national soon, so I don’t think I’ll be dealing too much with those cases. But I feel like we’re going to have to deal with the question of separation of church and state (with this country becoming more non-religious), polygamy, etc. I wanna be that change.

But if the lawyer thing don’t work out, then I’d rather be a political consultant, a lobbyist, or a web developer.

I want to be a doctor. None of the above reasons really dissuade me, @SwaggyC
I don’t care that there is a lot of school; I like school.
I’m not in it for the money; if I were, I would have chosen a different specialty, like cardiology.
I’m going to be doing what I think is the most fascinating thing EVER

The only thing I’d be worried about is the ability to maintain a steady romantic relationship and possibly have children. Doctors have a very high divorce rate and there is the problem of a working woman/mother and whatnot.

@louie41 you presented an intriguing topic of divorce rate because it is something I really haven’t considered. So, I found a link that was truly surprising. I post it here not to dissuade you but for informational purposes only. From my observations, I think there are unreasonable expectations from immediate family and friends that contribute to the high physician divorce rates. I haven’t been divorced but I asked my wife if she could be happy being a single parent before I proposed LOL! <a href=“Physicians Are Not Invincible”>Physicians Are Not Invincible;

Probably doctor, but I’m still not 110% decided. I really wanted to become an ER physician after the Boston Marathon bombings, watching the footage really struck a chord with me and I kind of felt like it was my calling. I wanted to be able to help people in other countries where incidents like that are an everyday occurrence (i.e. rural Middle East most likely). That sounds rather naive and idealistic though, and I want to make sure that this is really the right profession for me before devoting my life to it. I’ve been fascinated by science and medicine ever since I could remember, I love serving people, and thrive on high-stress, fast-paced situations. However, I also have a myriad of interests that I want to pursue into adulthood, and I’m not sure I could give those up if need be for medicine. There’s also the whole relationship thing, although right now, dating and getting married is the last thing on my mind. We shall see. That’s what college is for.

@frugaldoctor Just letting you know that I tried clicking the link, and it brought me to a login page. I don’t think we have access.

My apologies. I must have a cookie with a password in it. The article is titled, “The Painful Truth: Physicians Are Not Invincible” by Miller et al. I hope you can Google that and get access. It covers physician suicide, substance abuse, divorce, depression, risk factors.

@frugaldoctor Thanks! Was able to find it with no problem. Very interesting article.

Me, a year ago: I want to be a doctor

Obama: So there’s this thing called the PPACA…

Me now: …

Yakisoba, How do you post images?

@Yakisoba Don’t tell! It should be a secret!
