I really want to go to U of C, but I don't know if i can handle the academics. I love taking classes and learning, but I don't like it when there's lots of pressure and stress involved. I don't want to go crazy. Anyone else feeling this?

Well...you've gotta love it.

I mean...there's a reason the adcom. accepted you. Because you looked like someone who could definitely handle it, and would actually enjoy it.

I really does take a special kind of person to go to chicago and love it...and those are the people the adcoms. accept.

You shouldn't worry. If you got too inundated with too much work there would be a hundred people lined up to help you with whatever they could. There's a lot of solidarity at chicago.

Me!

And Chicago is really really cold.

I"m going to U of C!!!! I've always been sharp, but I've also learned to party too much in high school. I hope i can get my act together to survive at the school. I don't know how I got in, especially since being an Asian male makes it the hardest and my gpa isn't spectacular.

I agree with nonspontesequor. I don't know if I can handle that intense of academics in short 10 week intervals! Chicago keeps saying that students help each other and that there's no competition but im skeptical.

I'm nervous as well.

hey everyone. It's nice to know that others share my feelings.

After I posted, I found this off of the class 2011 blog -- it helped ease my worries (especially look at the FAQs and "A Day in The Life")

hey guys, don't be too nervous! i too was nervous at first but you eventually learn to settle down and as far as the workload goes, it's all about time management.

and theok, as for the competitiveness, i personally don't feel like this school is like cut-throat competitive among the students. i see lots of ppl studying together and helping each other out.

you will all be fine... one of the great things about the core is that at first you will all be in a class with (mostly) fellow first years who are as excited and anxious as you are, and in that small environment, after the first week you become really comfortable with one another and start having really intense discussions. It's a great time, it really is...

yeah I don't exactly have the highest IQ, I'm not a genius by any stretch of the imagination (although I'm not a simean either), but one thing I do have is a natural curiosity.

Although I can see your concern, my biggest concern is the quarter system, 10 weeks seems pretty short, that just seems like there's all that work and pressure compressed into a shorter time period. Eek.

The quarter system is really intensive, but as long as you stay on top of things you'll be fine. And I'm no genius either, and in fact, every day that goes by I feel less and less intelligent... you get used to it after a while lol.
