my GC suggested this, kind of out of the blue, as the ideal "safety" for me (as in somewhere i'd acutally be EXCITED to go to if i didnt get into my reaches)

at this point, as you may know, emory is my dream school and i plan to apply ED.
i also liked tufts, wake forest, vanderbilt, william&mary, and such.

is texas like these schools?

i havent visited yet but does anyone have any info about it??

why they did/didnt pick it?

its huge, which i'm not so sure about, but ive heard it doesnt seem so big when youre there?

I don't mean to be rude or discouraging, but UT is not a safety for anyone except for Texas residents in the top 10% of their class. State law requires UT to accept these students. Doesn't leave much room for others.

Just an opinon, might not be a 'safety' but if your are solid for schools mentioned, should be an option

As to what Austin and UT are like. Like you say its large, but like most large schools, you would break down into colleges/dorms/frats etc.

Austin considered a fairly open -progressive -city ... known for music, outdoor activities, lots of UT sports (like most state universities!)

UT, known for good business, engineering.. also PLAN II an rigorous liberal arts curriculum......

MY opinion as an adult is that any university is what you make of it ...then it is a little about reputation for jobs, grad school ...... i think very good and solid on these fronts

D looked into Vanderbilt (had a cousin go there) and also William and Mary (had an Aunt and Uncle go there). Both would have been more expensive Than UT even with the scholarships offered. And schools over on the east coast would definitely have a different feel than UT would. In my opinion Vandy and W&M are great schools with good reputations. Both have lots of preppy people. Of course, I've never been to either one so I'm just giving you my impression of those two without having visited. You should really try to visit if possible to see if those schools feel like a good fit.

If you are eligible for acceptance to those schools then you are probably gonna be able to get into UT in general. But getting into the more competitive programs within UT (planII, Business honors, Engineering, etc.) might be a different story. It might help you to look up the stats for these schools on UT's website.

yeah, UT isn't a real good idea for a saftey for anyone, let alone out of staters...maybe you should try UMass. I used to live in Massachusetts and UMass reminds me a bit of UT

UT is definitely NOT a safety for out of state students. By state law they have to take the top 10% of texas residenst and prefer them over out of staters.

thank you squirrel888 for bringing the thread back to the question... i'm more interested in what UT is like than how easy/difficult it is to get into.

so squirrell and bmod, and anyone else who goes there, what are your favorite and least favorite things about UT, and what specifically made you pick it?

also, if theres anyone from the northeast/new england area who goes to UT, i would be especially interested in your opinions of it.

Austin is a great city and gives you many opportunities. The atmosphere is just awesome at UT and around the city as well. Yup, UT is very well rounded, except in the premed area. =/. But if I were to change my mind there would be ample other choices to chose from.

-Austin is the best and you can't really beat it
-UT has an excellent top 10 engineering school with awesome facilities, and I am majoring in engineering
-a lot of research opportunities and world class proffessors, and is prestigious internationally as well as nationally
-great job placement
-great value for the price
-so much going on outside of the classroom, there is always something to do in a school this big
