I know they are out there, I have found a local one that doesn’t have a website but I was curious if any of you knew of any? In a world where even many top schools, Dartmouth we’re talking to you, take scholarships from your Financial Aid award before your parent contribution it would be nice to be armed with such a list!
Outside scholarships are paid directly to the college to prevent the type of cheating that you are contemplating. The colleges have a limited amount of money to give out based on need. You get what they determine you need.
Even if a scholarship is paid to you, you are still required to report it to the university.
The scholarship I am referring to is to be applied specifically to the cost of transportation to an out of state school and there is another that is to be applied specifically for a computer for college. NOT all scholarships are paid directly to the institution because not all scholarships are meant to cover the cost of tuition. Why would it be wrong to use this money as it is intended and not report it as something they can then tack off of a price tag it was never intended for anyways?
At ALL colleges, you are REQUIRED to report outside scholarships to the school. Required!
Please don’t defraud your college by misrepresenting yourself in terms of outside scholarships you receive.
Listen again. It doesn’t matter if the college gets the money direct,y or you do. It doesn’t matter what the scholarship is paying for.
You are REQUIRED to report outside scholarships to your college. REQUIRED.
It is up to each college to determine how or IF that will affect your need based aid award.
BUT…getting need based aid without providing all the information…and getting more of it because you don’t…is considered fraud. Is that how you want to start your college life…committing fraud for financial aid gain?
Sorry…you are misinformed on this one.
Report those outside scholarships. You can indicate what their intended use it. It is possible that your aid won’t change. Some schools include transportation in the cost of attendance. Some don’t. Buying a commuter would be considered personal expenses at most places.
You need to be HONEST…and you are asking us to give you the OK not to be.
Sorry…but you need to report the scholarships.
Am I to also report the scholarships I received to study music? Or the grant I received for an instrument that I intend to take to college with me? These too are scholarships that were not paid to the University but were intended to make my transition to college easier.
What about Ayn Rand scholarships? These are cash awards that say specifically they are to be used in whatever way I wish them to be.
^^
What part of REPORT ALL OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIPS do you not understand??? 8-|
What I choose to do will not be made right or wrong by anyone other than myself and a financial aid committee. My question was if anyone had any scholarships to list. I did not ask to be excused for it, and to be perfectly honest I don’t very much care. If it is wrong I will decide that for myself, I don’t need the validation of an online forum, I was just wondering who knew about such scholarships.
^^and with THAT attitude you expect people on this forum want to help you? =))
right…
you’ll find out that it is “wrong” to not report outside scholarships when FA awards are withdrawn and you are expelled.
Good luck with that attitude in college, lol!
I strongly suggest you consult a tax advisor. Some of the grants/awards/scholarships you are describing need to be reported to the IRS as income and may be taxable, for example a grant to cover the cost of transportation may be taxable. If you do not report and you are later caught you will also be subject to fines/penalties by the IRS.
What attitude? The attitude of self determination? God forbid I choose to make my own decisions rather than allow a group of online hawks tell me what is right and what is wrong. Because even if I choose to do as I’m told without determining definitively what is right and what is wrong for myself than the decision was pointless. It is between my FA office and me, I will discuss with them what is to be done. I’m really only interested in scholarship information, not your opinion on the matter and certainly not your opinion on my “attitude”.
Dartmouth has one of the most generous need based FA policies in the country after HYP. They have no qualms telling you that your parents are first in line when it comes to parents being first in line to pay for your education.
Just an FYI, coming from a Dartmouth parent; they do not play when it comes to their honor code and very very serious about it. Try to scam or cheat them, and you will find your self Parkhursted and most likely expelled.
we are going to save you from your self and not contribute to helping find ways to scam a school especially schools with extremely generous FA policies because your family can’t or won’t pay their share.
And because you are another student who has “got this” and now owes me $1 going to enjoy my tropical drink and close this thread.
You, the FA office and the Internal Revenue Service.
