Anyone mind telling me what my chances of admission are?

Demographics:

White male (I know being a male is a plus for W&M), currently living in VA. I am homeschooled, so I don’t know if that will play favorably or not here.

Test scores/grades:

SAT: 1460 (690R/W, 770M) with a 16 on the essay
ACT: 30 composite (probably won’t submit since the SAT correlates to a high ACT score) with an 8 on the essay.
GPA: currently have a 3.97 unweighted gpa and a 4.23 weighted gpa (unfortunately haven’t been able to have lots of AP classes due to being homeschooled).

I also have a total of 14 college credits atm due to being dual enrolled and will have 21 by the end of this upcoming semester.

College classes taken: General Chem 1 w/ lab (A), World Civ 1 (A), General Psychology (A), and Precalc (A)

College classes taking this year: General College Physics 1, Applied Calc 1

ECs:

Varsity debate/speech (10,11,12) 8hr/week 40week/year

Church youth group (9,10,11,12) 2hr/week 52week/year

Tutor for math and chemistry. I tutored college, high school, middle school, and elementary kids (10,11,12) 3hr/week 36week/year

Geography camp helper (9,10,11,12) 30hr/week 1 week/yr

AWANA (basically just a church-related group that meets outside church) (10,11,12) 2hr/week 30week/year

Library internship (10) Haven’t calculated the hours/weeks but basically I helped lead a bookclub for 3rd-5th grades during the summer

Youth medical mentor ship: (9,10,11) (had to stop due to moving) 2hr/week 9week/year

General community service: probably around 200hrs or so.

Family responsibility: taking care of the family dog (thought I should add this since it is my responsibility and takes time) 52 week/yr and about 3 hours total a week

Honors:

8th place in state of NC for team policy debate (11th grade year; my family is military so I just moved the summer before senior year)

Qualifying mark for nationals for team policy debate (11th)

12th place in state of NC for Cold Reading speech event (11th)

Best speaker in team policy debate (4x)

First place in science fair: based on my experiment investigating the effects silver nanoparticles have on E. coli (9th)

Recs:

Soooo I’m homeschooled so technically my “counselor” one is just coming from my mom which probably won’t be considered

Teacher recs: I know one teacher that I will be asking for a letter and she knows me super well and she loves me so it will be really good; haven’t decided on the second teacher

Optional rec: having the lady that hired me to tutor her kids for math write one for me. I helped raise her son’s D in geometry to an A by the end of the year.

Also, another optional rec will be coming from my debate coach who absolutely loved me and knew me very well.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!!

It is difficult for most of us to assess homeschooled students based on a short synopsis. I suspect W&M may have an admission counselor who specializes in homeschooled applicants. You should probably ask what specifically they want to see in an application from a homeschooler. I definitely recommend doing an interview, submitting more test scores rather than fewer, and not mentioning the dog responsibilities at all. All general advice and not W&M specific.

From every single campus tour I’ve been on (Duke, Wake forest, UF, UVA, George Mason, and University of Alabama) have ENCOURAGED every applicant to put family responsibilities on their application, so I don’t see any harm in that. While yes I do agree that homeschooled applicants can be hard to view, I have proven that I’m capable of taking advanced classes through dual enrollment and taking the most amount of courses possible through it. As for the test scores, why would I need to submit multiple scores? I see no benefit in that, as it costs money to send each individual score (which adds up) and 1460 is my highest composite (which is also above or just in the middle 50% for W&M)

Ah - the debater is present :-*

I hope I didn’t come across as rude in my last comment by any means. I just get told that over and over again so I would appreciate opinions on my chances of admission and not necessarily a comment explaining the difficulty of evaluating homeschooled students

I think you are really in great shape for W&M.

Don’t know anything about home school chances but your objective numbers look good. Debate club should be interesting to W&M as that fits their vibe well. S had similar numbers and was admitted OOS RD. Chose another school
but W&M is wonderful and an outstanding academic institution.

Best of luck.

Regarding test scores, you want to bolster your good SAT score by sending the good ACT score. By doing so, you reinforce that the SAT score isn’t a fluke. Also, because the ACT has subjects, it will show you are a strong student across the board. SAT subject tests will also support your application. As for the costly score reports, fortunately many colleges now allow self-reporting on applications, and want official reports only from enrolling students.
