How are the university apartments? And the chances of getting into one (only wondering because I know some people who stay in the uni apartments continue to live there for the next year, so limited rooms?)?

Bfired- the selby apartments are on Kelton, Midvale, and Strathmore. I don't know how into Tiverton I'd be. I know people who live there, but its significantly farther than anything on the west side of campus. In that respect the Selby locations are all good, but the apartments are just majorly overpriced. I know a loooot of people who live in them because people have to pack 4-6 people into an apartment in order for it to be affordable. They're newish, but they're just bland white-walled, carpeted apartments. Small kitchens, loud due to the sheer amount of people who live there.

I dunno. Not my thing really.

allie, if you dont decide now to get an apartment, what are you left with? if you.. decide like in the spring which you originally suggested

?? I'm confused.

I suggest that if you're unsure about what you want to do you should apply for on campus housing so you have that option. Because like I said, you can always reject the offer if you decide later on that you want an apartment. But if you don't apply for housing and then decide you don't want to do an apartment, you're somewhat screwed.

If you're just asking about the availability of apartments later in the year, like i said, don't stress about it. TONS of leases/subleases open up between June and September when people graduate and move. A lot of landlords have their leases start during this time because it coincides with the school's schedule. So its not like if you don't decide right away that you'll never find an apartment. Like I said, I found mine in mid-august, and I really have few complaints. The thing is, unless you're signing up for a waitlist because you're SURE you want to move into those buildings, there isn't really much point in looking now. Since you won't be moving until August or September (maybe July), you wouldn't sign a lease until then anyways. You can only really seriously consider an apartment a short time before you're ready to move in because its not like it will still be available 6 or 7 months from now. You know? So thats why I said that looking this early is kind of silly.

I DO advocate talking to people and seeing if your friends would want to move in with you because that would make the roommate situation a lot easier. However I wouldn't be too serious about it yet because things change and people have a tendency to back out or change plans or just not be friends anymore. As far as finding the actual place, there's not a lot you can do until it gets closer to Fall quarter.

"and I really have few complaints"

...really? really REALLY?

jk Allie, I heart your rants =P

Dude compared to some other apartments I've seen in westwood mine actually rocks. I mean, some stuff sucks, but i fully acknowledge that it could be soooooo much worse.

of course allie secures the best deals hahah

this site is down like 24/7 now very upsetting

Dude yeah. its actually really, really annoying and i kind of want to just go away for a week and hope it gets better.

very buggy...

I want to live on campus.
Anyone want to buddy up?

I wanna find a roommate too. My single is as big as a 1 bedroom apartment. I don't like it because it's too big. I live near Sawtelle/Olympics, loads of Japanese restaurants and markets in there. But I want a female roommate. :(

yeah but yo, westwood is EXPENSIVE. My 2 bedroom apartment goes for 2050 and thats the cheapest i found. Most go for around $2500. So yknow. Have to pay extra for the location. You can find cheaper a little further away (even south of wilshire will be less expensive). But I don't think you'll find a studio for 800 on the westside.

Hell, my brother's 2 bedroom in irvine (which has some of the highest real estate rates in the country) is only $1600 and is waaaay newer and better all around than mine. LA sucks that way.

An apartment near me is leasing now. 3bed/3bath for 2600. It's in WLA and it's a gated apartment. But there's a construction site right in front of that apartment.

Well but its also in a totally different neighborhood than i was referring to. $2600 about standard for that size in some areas of west la. However, Westwood, especially north of wilshire, is significantly more expensive than other west la neighborhoods. Westwood/Beverly Hills/Bel Air/ West Hollywood have the highest rates in LA county (with the exception of some areas in Santa Monica) and based on everything I've seen, the same size apartment directly next to UCLA would run closer to $3000-3500. Unfortunately its just what you have to deal with if you want to be close to campus.

There were $900 singles in West Hollywood this summer, but I don't know whether the area and aparments shady or not. I tired to rent a $89x single on Gayley, but there were many applications before me. Besides, that apartment is not good at all. I saw windows were broken. And I tried to rent another single in Brentwood for a gram, but many applications also.

Im looking mainly for westwood apartments though, seeing as how i lack a car and don't particularly want to take busses every day.

how easy this would be if la had subsidized cabs....sigh

subsidized cabs...if only =/
