Anyone Notified about Major Entrance Scholarship?

The website says that within 1 or 2 weeks of your decision you should be notified about the Major Entrance Scholarship. Looking back at past years though it seems like they did not necessarily stick to that.
I’m curious to know if anyone knows when US students usually hear back. Post if you hear from them!

@andros12‌ Been over 3 weeks here. Still waiting. When did you receive your acceptance?

@chilliums‌ Well I guess we’ll wait together! I got mine back on the 11th of Feb so not too long yet. Might be worth calling the office to find out what their plans are?

@andros12‌ From previous forums I’ve also seen that typically the waiting time is longer than the 1-2 weeks they tell applicants. Maybe after this week I’ll check with them!

@chilliums‌ I think it could be worth checking with them tomorro! Anyone else heard from them?

Has anyone heard about major entrance scholarships?

I just heard from them today!

wow @Arlmom2‌ seems like we’re on the same circuit

D2 apparently received the $3K non-renewable award a couple of days ago, but only found out when she logged in tonight. More good news!

@andros12 it looks as though you and D2 have at least W&M and McGill in common. Congrats again on the 1693 semi – unfortunately, D2 didn’t get asked to write the essays. But she did interview at Maryland today for Banneker-Key, which is a potential full ride. They give about 250 full rides and about 150 partials, which is quite unusual. Everyone who interviews is guaranteed the partial, which is a very nice way to do it!

@Arlmom2 that’s great about Maryland! Congratulations to your daughter, and best of luck to her!

@andros12 Did you get one of the major renewable scholarships? If so, you may be the first one on CC this year. For that matter, you may have been the first for the non-renewable as well! Congrats!

@Arlmom2‌ Thank you for kudos. Yes, I got the non-renewable a while back at the same time as I received my acceptance. The major renewable is the one I just heard about a few days ago! Does anyone know how many of these renewables they offer each year?

@andros12 Congrats on both scholarships! I’ve never seen an indication of how many of each they give. And the McGill pages on cc aren’t especially active, so it’s hard to tell from the traffic here. But I don’t remember hearing much about the scholarships at all when D1 applied two years ago. And I think you’re the first student I’ve heard of who got both. Anyone else have more information?

Congratz Andros!
Was your Status/Reason of the major renewable “Not-Awarded” until a few days ago?

I’m wondering whether “Not-Awarded” is just a placeholder until they send me an email with a real decision.

My S got accepted in early February, received an offer of a one-time entrance scholarship about two weeks after the acceptance note, then a major renewable scholarship in another two weeks. While he was waiting for the scholarship decision, the status of his major renewable scholarship was something like “application is being reviewed by a selection committee”.

Thanks, @fleuroo7 The selection committee message is the same one that’s currently on D2’s page. She received the one-time scholarship on March 2nd, a little under a week after she was admitted. So she probably still has some time to go before hearing about the major renewable scholarship. Congrats to your son!

@TomofBoston – your insights on the note from @Overclasshero above? My assumption would be that “Not Awarded” meant that the student did not receive the scholarship, but you know more about McGill than I do.

@Arlmom2: That would be my assuption too.

I received my acceptance to McGill on February 19th and a nonrenewable scholarship on February 24th. On March 5th I was awarded a renewable major entrance scholarship. Woo!

Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this, but do any of you guys know if the scholarship qualifications posted on the McGill site are strict rules or just general recommendations? I ask because I’ve heard of people with 3.8 or 3.9 GPAs getting scholarships, while it appears the cutoff is a 95, or 4.0. Can a really good essay make up for being slightly below in terms of grades, or do they just immediately chuck anything that’s not a 4.0?

@tomofboston @overclasshero So here’s a bit of a confusing result.

D2 received the one-time scholarship two weeks ago. Today, she checked the portal and on the top for Major Entrance Scholarship, it said “Not awarded”. But when she scrolled down to where her one-time scholarship had been posted, it noted that it had been replaced with the $5K major renewable scholarship. So I guess I’d suggest that @overclasshero check twice and scroll down to the bottom.

@tomofboston had you seen that before? It could either be an error, or perhaps it’s because she didn’t get the $10K? Either way, I suspect McGill isn’t competitive with her other offers, so we’re not likely to worry a great deal about it.
