Hello, all - I KNOW I've seen a thread on this either here or on the Music board but I can't locate it, so...

My son just got his senior year AP scores and got "4s" in both AP Music Theory and AP Studio Art (2D Design). He's seriously thinking of majoring in both Music and Art - likely either Choral Education/Performance with Visual Art (art may be a minor).

He knows in advance, he'd be WAY busy. He's gotten between the AP courses and CLEP 8-10 hours so far. Not bad, but at the very best he's looking at summer school all the way through. Given our crazy economy/government policies right now he'd like to be prepared to teach either high school (or lower) music or art, but he's won national awards for his singing and looks like he'd have an interesting shot in that field as well.

You all know as well as I the certainties/uncertainties in both those fields. From what I can gather there may have been very few kids who made a "4" or better in AP Theory and AP Studio Art the same year so he may have an interesting though not fully unique skill set. I'm just curious on who all out there has majored in both music and visual arts, and your experiences.

TY in advance...

don’t know anyone done that in person but I do know it is nearly impossible to do them both seriously, unless you are only aiming for “maybe able to teach at schools/state where not so strict about regulations and got enuff budget to hire young non-core subjects fringe electives full time teacher”
I don’t know much about singing, but my kid’s HS jazzband teacher did conduct choir as well. He got terminal degree in music, starting at conservatory program UG.
most visual art public school teachers here (NYC) are actually awful artists but better off educators, except very few art magnet programs. It is different skill sets you need.
go do anything for UG, then do grad school for art education, not studio art. it is sad that sometimes kids with pushy artist parents know more about stuff or can draw better than teachers.
I don’t know where you are and where you’d want to teach, better check out requirement that varies state from state, if wanting legit teachers license.

I can see that parents get all misty eyed when they find genius in making in your hand. I did, too!!!
the reality is, AP 4 is dime a dozen, esp. for visual art. some colleges won’t even place you out for drawing 101 class.
I am assuming that prep for conservatory must be harder than prepping art portfolio, yes? would require layer of screenings and auditions?
if kid’s passion is in there, better not stretch too thin, or you might regret it later.
there are few art schools that offer performing art and visual art but you need to commit already when applying. best you can do is joining the club in the other side.
consortiums like one in Cleveland or SMFA /Berklee exists but classes you can cross register are limited, if any.

Or do you mean you want to do selective LACs that offer both major? I spied Swarthmore’s commencement pamphlet and there were arts major double, triple. actually nobody there singly majored art only.
I never cared about giant universities but there might be such programs with less core academics, or you can bring all CLEPs so you can take more arts per semester.

Not to burst your bubble, but the music/art combo you see in your son is more common than you think. It will not necessarily be a hook that would make admittance to college easier, but instead will define your son as being multi-talented. I have 2 daughters who are both talented vocalists and artists. One chose to be a vocal performance major going for her BM degree at NYU. She dropped art in school, but has used her talent in design in music-related internships. My other D is going to be applying to art and art education programs this year, but may be auditioning for music scholarships where they are available. I can name many students in our high school who have taken both AP music theory and studio art.

The real question is can you major in both at college at the same time? I think the way to do it would be to get a BA degree in art studio and a BM degree in music. You would probably be able to do it by taking full schedules of 18 credits a term if you have AP credits. You may need to go a summer or two as well. The BM degree will require more credits (and will probably be audition based.) The BA degree in studio art would need to be not more than 30 or so credits to pull this off.

Studio art programs are fairly common in most colleges. The BM degree is less available–but if you try for a BA or BS in music instead, you will probably not have the performance component your son wants. However, I would not recommend trying to take music or art education as an undergraduate degree, since those degrees are already like taking a double major in music or art plus education. Instead, I would take education classes on the master’s level only.

In order to teach, you can choose either a music or art education master’s program. Taking the education classes required for either master’s would allow you to qualify for certification in both as long as you pass both subject area tests required for certification.

Good luck!

Thank you both for your advice!

uskoolfish, you’re not bursting my bubble at all - [there are plenty of performing artists who are also accomplished visual artists.](http://imagemakersart.com/)

What I was surprised at was how few AP Music Theory kids took AP Studio Art, and vice versa…my son was the only kid at his high school (enrollment on first day: 3,500+ over four grades) last school year ('10-'11) who took both.

He graduated in May and is going to a smaller private college next month. He’s really just now deciding what studies he wants to focus on. Most of his scholarship money is coming from voice and academics…we’re having to thread the needle on planning his schedule now if he really sticks with a voice/visual art (hey: V/V…I like that ">) curricula four his four years. We’re also having to prepare for if he thinks he’s regressing in his voice training (his teacher was THAT GOOD in high school, and in retrospect we, no, “he”, may not have done enough college research…but that’s a decision he’ll have to live with) and wants to transfer, in which case the “V/V” will likely become just a “V”. My wife is disabled and I was laid off last year so we’ll have to financially plan this carefully if it happens. But…such is life.

Again, thanks for the advice!

so you are dad, and the kid have already made choice.

there is this very annoying bragger mom poster in the parents forum whose D is a singer and high high stats but did not want to leave too far from home (somewhere in the midwest-sh and mentioned about scared to fly alone without mommy) and mom being single parent full ride getter, aimed rather low and gotten good merit and process done by winter.
judging from the way she bragged about her D’s talent and mom’s OCD search, this small not-so-USNWR-but-gave-full-ride school- must offer decent singing program.

there are hidden gems of schools. maybe you’ve gotten lucky already.
good luck V/V

Ok it goes like this.
I am sorry folks I don’t usually dig people’s dirt but this one here got some issues, don’t ya think?

-sang her solo Mozart aria at the Spring Concert Monday night, and it was lovely. I have never heard her sing backed by a 45-piece symphony orchestra. It was pretty amazing to me. I had gone in to school Friday to hear them rehearse, and that’s when I cried.
During the actual performance, I just watched and listened, and soaked up the moment. She got a standing O from a packed auditorium and handled it with grace. That would’ve rattled me, had I been up there!
Afterwards, she was awarded the school’s highest music award (which we knew was coming her way, but still lots of fun). No $, but a lovely inscribed plaque for her, and her name engraved on a gold plaque and mounted on the wall of the school’s music wing.

Classes - DONE!

Dr. Visit, all required vaccinations and forms - DONE!

Last 2 finals - tomorrow, and no sweat!

Piano recital - tomorrow night.

Weekend - insane continuing practice/rehearsals for next weekends solo vocal recital. Frenzied continued Reception planning for me.

Next week - out-of-town family, baccalaureate, vocal recital, graduation.

bears and dogs, ?

I just wanted to know from people how many they knew who’ve done a dual music/visual art major in college or some combination thereof (i.e. major/minor).

I love our son and God’s blessed him with certain talents, but he’s no better than anyone else. He’s really been questioning precisely what he wants to do in life, and at one point even whether he was ready for college. And, as I said yesterday, his skill set is not uncommon among artists.

OP dad
I know it is a wrong thing to ask you at the moment
but if you can answer, please
Is there anything or anybody that annoy you?
neighbor, in-laws, traffic cops… anything
tell me just one, I will shut up then.

bears and dogs,

Yes.

Marxism/Leninism, and the dogged adherence to same by much of our current national leadership. They’re destroying the America we’ve known as well as seriously altering the futures of all these precious children (not said as an insult) we post about on these forums…if so many who’ve occupied leadership in D.C. since 2007 get their way much of what we discuss here and all the plans we (think we) have made will be worth as much as the last bag of garbage you or I took out to be collected curbside. (The suffering art programs of all kinds would endure would also be among the least of our worries.)

But you’re correct, I should neither bash myself emotionally nor blame my son for his choice or lack thereof. It looks like he’s been blessed, and we’ll see what happens. I’ve also learned here some things to expect (or not) if he tries a dual music/art major. That was my intent on starting the thread.

God bless.

now I know I did ask wrong question.

what I meant to say is, and why so sad and annoying is^ this bragger mom would only brag in parents forum where people don’t know what the heck “aria” is. far as I know never in the music forum nor youngarts thread (suppose she can not compete because she can’t fly)
you are a brave dad. I shall shut up.

“Marxism/Leninism, and the dogged adherence to same by much of our current national leadership. They’re destroying the America we’ve known as well as seriously altering the futures of all these precious children”

Oh for crying out loud.
Oh yes, let’s definitely just move back to the good old days.

How far back do you want to go? Back to that America where our precious children have their futures preserved as long as they aren’t female or minorities?

I suggest parents stick to discussion of college issues and keep these sorts of biased political comments out of the threads.

But while we’re at it, just which of today’s politicians do you brand as Marxist or followers of Lenin? As far as I know Bernie Sanders is the only non-Republican or Democrat and I believe he defines himself as a democratic socialist which as a little FYI is not the same thing as a Marxist.
