Guitar is one of my fav hobbies, just wondering if anyone else plays guitar. I was thinking about bringing my Acoustic to CPW (i bring it everywhere i go)

but i don't know if i'd have time to play it or if it would be bulky or awkward, but if anyone else plays tell me, and bring your acoustic so we can jam!

I play guitar, but I don't have an acoustic. (I will have one by the time we actually go for first semester though!) I have an electric, but I am only semi-decent. =)

I play the guitar. I have an acoustic and a classical but I don't think I'm going to bring them to CPW.

yeah it'd probably be bulky...
cool to hear some others play guitar tho, i have a lot of friends at my school that play

a lil off topic, but I'm interested in learning guitar or the sort (bass / electric w/e) while I'm at MIT.

How fast can one master the art of guitar playing?

not to discourage you
but probably a lifetime.

Guitar is one of the most versatile instruments SO many different styles and techniques, you can play most music for piano, violin etc. on guitar as well. there is so much to learn its amazing...

check out Steve Vai, Joe Satriani to see some REAL guitar work. Even besides those there are so many amazing players of different styles like Shawn Lane, Al DimEola etc.

but if you just wanna play for fun... maybe a year or two... it took me about a year to get good at it but i practiced like 3 hrs a day. Its not too hard but like all instruments you gotta have patience and devotion, i can help you out or whatever if you want.

I have an electric, but i'm not too good. CPW lessons? lol

800 posts. wow. i think it's time I get off of CC and go to MIT already.

I think classical guitar is pretty much the coolest thing ever. :) I wish I could play...

what styles do u play i play neo-classical/metal and alot of funky bluesy RHCP/sublime/clapton mix type stuff

They say it takes 8 hrs/day of practice for 20 years straight to become a guitarist who is "average" :p

Now to get back to earth - you will be able to play many songs within 2 months. First 2 weeks you will have sore fingers but if you survive that, in 2 months you'll be fairly happy with yourself to continue practising. From then on, it's just a matter of more practice to perfect yourself.

haha, i knew that one would have to practice a lifetime and you wouldn't still be able to perfect it.. I just wanna have fun and jam w/ others, and guitar is a good instrument to do that (i play the clarinet now, and not a real "jam w/ others" instrument.

How 'bout basses? For normal playing, isn't it just arppegios and keeping whole note beats at the root of the chord? :-P looks so cool tho

If you know your music theory, you can cut it down to a month or even 3 weeks before you will be jamming with your friends. But any kind of improvisation demands that you take your time and study the fretboard (learn the notes) and practise switching fingers to the right string at the right fret and picking the right string with the other hand... takes just a while to get right but once you get used to it, it's not too difficult.

As for bass, hell NO it's not just chord roots sustained for whole beats! :p It's a lot more than that and I think bass is still a cool instrument, contrary to the way bass players are looked down upon by guitarists ( ahem  ). You also don't usually play arpeggios for bass.

For an example of what bass playing is, listen to any RHCP songs or the song "Strong enough" by Cher or Love you madly by Cake. Also, for an extreme example, listen to the bassist from this small band called "Manic" (look on youtube or putfile.com).

bass is often underestimated, it is still quite difficult to be good at ... look at Flea of RHCP, that slap pop takes a while to learn.
But if you just wanna jam you can PROBABLY learn bass about 2-3 times faster than guitar. (but its not as cool as guitar ... until you start slap-popping etc.)

Mmm...flamenco, baby.

EDIT: SalikSyed, agreed!! Flea's quite the bassist ;) While we're speaking of the RHCP, has anyone heard their new single "Dani California" yet (premiered today)? And is anyone as SERIOUSLY excited for their new album as I am? :) hehe

no i've not heard it yet... but by god i love the chilli peppers ! favorite band ever (along with sublime)

Well then give it a listen!! It's on the official site redhotchilipeppers.com (in the News section) and the Quicktime 128 kbps version is surprisingly nice quality. Hmm, maybe we could discuss good music a bit further at CPW ;)

i'm loving this new single!

mix of funk/wah-wah riffs and a bit of harder classic rockish style solos add to the distorted power chord riffs = cool
i like Frusciantes simple to the point solos, he's a great guitarist. The outro solo was especially cool

vocals:
awesome, love kiedis , love the anthemic quality
California rest in peace~!
haha ... seems like what i'll be saying when/if i go to MIT lol

btw guitarman whats ur real name? mine is my screen name
and they're playing boston too ! if i go to MIT i will def. go to that show whos with me?

Yeah, it's "da bomb"! lol...the chorus is amazing, and Anthony is sounding better than he has in years. Fru's solo at the end rocks, too--very Purple Haze! His playing is supposedly very Hendrix-inspired on this new album and from the few songs I've heard live bootlegs of, it seems like that's going to be the case :D

My name is Adam, btw. As I see it, I'll most likely be either in Cambridge or New Haven next year and there are no Connecticut shows on the list, so either way I'll probably be heading to Boston for the show--so yeah, I say we go! ;)
