Hey guys, I'm a prospective transfer student looking at Claremont McKenna and Amherst among others. Are there any transfer acceptees out there who actually received a good financial aid package? If so, where do you go to school? I will need to rely heavily on aid, and I have heard horror stories on this site about transfers getting shafted. Thanks.

I recently got accepted to Northwestern as a transfer with a tremendous aid package. A $29,000 Northwestern scholarship + $6,000 in federal grants. That fully pays tuition. They also hooked me up with subsidized loans and a little bit of work study to cover the remaining costs.

I am transferring from a Northern California community college.

I should point out that Northwestern says they generally do not offer scholarship aid to transfers. So don't throw in the towel, even if a school "generally" offers little transfer aid. You won't know untill you see the aid offer! If you really need the help, the more wealthy institutions are likely to be generous, provided you have good reasons for transferring.

I got great financial aid from Colorado College (they gave me MORE than the FAFSA said they should!!!) and pretty good financial aid from USC which is where I'm transferring too. I was admitted to USC as a freshman last year but didn't go but I got a better package this year (almost double the grant!!!!) as a transfer. However, NYU gave me no grant at all... I guess it just depends on the school... I was worried too that I wouldn't get good aid as a transfer but for the most part I'm pretty happy. I bet Amherst will give you a good aid package (I know someone who transferred there and was happy about their package). I don't know much about Claremonts fin aid for transfers but I know a bunch of people who went as freshman and got GREAT aid. good luck!

gregarmis -
i was interested in amherst for awhile as well but i think i checked out the stats...it seems like they only had a/b 10 transfer students...then again that may have been bowdoin but you may want to check into that. In the end I decided I liked the smaller colleges but the incredibly small number of people they accepted made it not worth trying.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll keep it in mind.

I received almost a full scholarship from Northwestern, but nothign from Columbia...

18K from UCSD. I will hopefully graduate debt free. They took care of tuition and housing, and a bunch of other stuff.

full tuition, room and board from stanford in scholarship and grants...
