Anyone Turn Down Yale (or other comparable schools) for a lower ranked school?

I am asking this question for the sake of discussion. Harvard, Princeton, etc kids if your surfing the forums feel free to chime in. I know Yale had an overall matriculation rate of around 70% (give or take a few). I am curious to see if anyone else turned down top Ivys (or other comparable schools) for a lower ranked school (due to financial reasons). I personally declined Yale's offer for a full ride merit scholarship to UNC Chapel Hill. I am wondering if anyone else did the same thing. And if so what were your reasons? I see this thread becoming an informational tool for next year's incoming college Class of 2010.

I wasn't refering to cross admits. I was asking about people who turned down HYPS for lower ranked schools. Now I don't know Byerly if you call Harvard a lower ranked school than Yale? I didn't think so.

Eh? I thought those were people claiming to have turned down Harvard for Yale, which was in keeping with your theme.

byerly that was over the top. yes, we know you are a harvard troll, but you needn't be ridiculous.

haha, i think byerly is awesome. he never overtly insults yale or any other school, but he manages to get in numerous veiled jabs that he fervently denies when anyone tries to call him out on it, and makes mention of how he never insults other colleges. it's genius, really.

It is certainly no insult to a school to say it is almost as good as Harvard.

I certainly find you annoying, be you insulting Yale or not.

Even as a future Yalie, I have to say that Byerly's wit does add some life to these boards.

I appreciate the real juicy advice that he gives people...the catty quips, not so much.

[exerpt from long June 7, 2005 article in USA Today on the magic of the Harvard 'brand name."]

"It used to be the case that of students who were admitted to Harvard and Princeton or Harvard and Yale, seven of 10 would choose to go to Harvard," .... "It may be more now. There is a tendency for the academically best to skew even more to Harvard. We just get our socks beat off in those cases."

http://www.usatoday.com/money/2005-...vard-usat_x.htm

oh come on byerly you are spreading that article as fast as can be. This is the 3rd time I've seen it in 5 minutes on cc.

it does not reflect well upon harvard to have an alum so desperate to shout out to everybody that harvard is #1

after all, this year, Princeton is #1 :)

Are you talking about the transitory USNews rankings?

To be sure, Princeton is currently tied at #1 with Harvard.

I rather suspect that Yale will surpass Princeton (and possibly Harvard as well) in the next edition, based on the Class of 2008 admit rates, but that will matter little to the top applicants, who will, as ever, overwhelmingly prefer Harvard.

At the end of the day, we all hold one truth: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and UPENN are the most prestigious universities.

I don't want to get sucked into this little catfight, but UPENN is definitely not one of the top 4 prestigious universities :) .

In answer to Seven Nights, my friend's brother got a half-ride to Yale, but could not afford the second half of the tuition so is now going to Sonoma State which I don't even think is acknowledged in the rankings as existing.

Byerly, it seems you are outdone by your own article. Harvard really is a brand name and students choose it on prestige, something which you have argued against vehemently in the past. I also don't see how that professor you quote, unless he is on yale and princeton's admissions boards is a reliable source of cross admit data. Your incessant posting of this article on this and other boards only reaffirms that even harvard alums are insecure about their alma mater.

Jaimie, thankfully USNews doesn't rank prestige but rather quality, as they see fit.

thinkjose1-I wasn't referring to USNews, but rather to amnesia's previous post that explicitly stated that UPenn was one of the four "most prestigious universities."

according to USNEWs, UPENN is.

But according to thinkjose1, USNews ranks quality, not prestige. So the fact that UPenn is #4 in their rankings should say nothing about their prestige. Anyways, I really do think that UPenn is a good school for many people, so I didn't mean to come across as anti-Penn in any way.
