I have read through previous posts on CC, and wiki, and the Honor Society's website...very mixed reviews. Is this honor society similar to Phi Beta Kappa? Does is help with Grad school applications/job resumes? From what I can gather, the only criterion is being in the top 15% of your class. It seems listing one's GPA may achieve the same thing.

Are there any CC parents/students with personal experience that can shed some light on this offering?

My daughter was invited and we had the same questions about whether there is any value. We decided, since it is so cheap to join, why not, and its something on the resume in case she’s looking for things down the line. While you can put class rank, sometimes that is tacky and often you don’t know your rank (we only knew she was in the top 15% because of the invite).

It turn out that at her school, it is actually a real service organization that organized activities, and tutoring. I think whether it is at all active varies from school to school. She was interested in participating but hasn’t been able to yet. It isn’t hugely prestigious, but it was worth joining for her.

On grad school applications, you can say “invited into the Golden Key Honor Society” if you receive an inviation but choose not to join. If a person is not planning on taking on a leadership role or being active otherwise, I think saying “invited into” has the same weight as “member of”.

APOL, I was searching here on CC for references to “Golden Key” just yesterday. We’ve decided to pay the dues. I think it is a worthwhile honor to list on a resume, particularly since you can then specify that it is given to the top 15%. While my son lists his GPA on his resume, it isn’t clear what his rank is - we (and presumably potential employers) wouldn’t have known it was top 15% without getting notification of this honor.

jrpar~
It may prove to be not the best choice for the reasons you state, however, the ball was in her court. Her reasoning seemed sound to me, and I supported her decision.
Thank you for your input-APOL-a Mum
