I am a senior in high school. I really want to attend Emory University, but I was rejected. So I will be attending Gordon College (barnesville, ga) this fall and then transfer to Emory my sophmore year! I wholeheartedly desire to attend Emory!! Is there any advice? or What can I do to improve my chances of being accepted into Emory? thanks

I was waitlisted by Columbia and then later rejected in HS. I went to Boston College for one year and I applied for transfer, and got in!

There’s a lot of hubbub about having a certain GPA, but I’m not sure this is true because I got in with a 3.58. I’m sure many others who were accepted had way higher.

My essay was better than my high school essay for sure, but I didn’t think it was earth-shattering or anything.

I have a hunch that Columbia looked at my ECs from college. In high school, I devoted my life to Model UN, Model Congress, Mock Trial… that sort of thing. I couldn’t really find a similar MUN organization at BC so I instead joined an improv comedy troupe. I can’t say for sure, but I think that joining something totally different from what you did in high school tells the school that you’re applying to that there are new sides of your personality that you’re exploring in college.

I’m a senior, accepted to Emory, but declined admissions for a MUCH MUCH MUCh cheaper, close to home state school. Hopefully there are few people that get accepted the first time around and rejected as a transfer… it’s kinda sad but i do plan on working my ass off in college!

Daughter’s best friend denied BC last year. Just got accepted as a transfer this year.

I was waitlisted by Brown last year, but got in now! Just rock your freshman year wherever you are and give it another go, that’s really all you can do…and it works!

Was rejected from Wharton first-year, went to Northeastern, and I was justed accpeted into Wharton.

rejected by CMC last year, went to Penn for a year, and got in this year

Outright rejected by Cornell CAS in senior year. Got in as sophomore transfer to Cornell ILR.

waitlist then reject from Columbia in hs, got in as a sophomore. (applied to seas in hs, found out in my current college that I’m not an engineering type of person by any means, then got into cc.)

so…what if i want to try Penn a third time…

I spent the majority of my high school tenure in an online charter school. For those not familiar with them, they are extremely lax and lack any real rigor. I enrolled this fall in a local branch campus of a state university, took my ACT (nothing great, 26), and am currently on my 3rd quarter while maintaining a 4.0 with a full course-load. Of the four schools I pursued, I was accepted to 3 (Beloit, George Washington University and New York University) and wait-listed at one (Kenyon College).

It’s really all about getting into college, no matter which school you are at, and trying your absolute best. I had to sacrifice certain “normal” first-year activities but the reward was much greater.

I took many AP courses, coasted through high school, and earned mostly B’s. The last time I checked, I had a 3.75 weighted GPA, but it’s probably going to end up somewhere around 3.6 weighted due to B’s and C’s in my second semester of senior year (graduating on Saturday!). I took the SAT in March 2008 and earned a 1150/1790. I took it again this year for scholarships, and I took the ACT, receiving a score of 26 (only knowing a week in advance that I was going to take the test!). I got accepted to Howard University (attending), Louisiana State University, Morehouse College, and waiting to hear from the waitlist at Tulane. There were plenty of schools that I wanted to apply to but did not such as Yale, Georgetown, UC Berkeley, Washington University in St. Louis, Brown, Columbia, and Dartmouth. I realized that my performance did not merit admission into the University of Texas, let alone my desired schools. However, I talked to a student at Georgetown University who had similar test scores and a similar GPA to mine and was accepted his senior year with a $37,000 financial aid package. It makes me want to try again for the colleges I wanted to attend.

Does anybody have any advice about transferring? Should I wait to apply for junior standing or get my 4.0 or close to it freshman year, and apply for sophomore standing? I am so ready to focus and reach my potential next year!

I have similar SAT scores and was able to get into Georgetown so it is definitely possible. If you think you can do exceptionally well during your first year at Howard (specifically your first semester) I’d suggest to transfer for sophmore standing. That way, you’ll have three years to experience your desired school.

If you have more specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Can anyone chance me for these schools? And any advice about study habits, course suggestions, etc. to prepare for transferring either freshman year or sophomore year would be greatly appreciated. I don’t know an incredible amount about college life since I am a first-generation student, so I apologize if I am being a little too broad in my questions.
