Anyone with a 3.5-3.7 UW gpa get into any elite schools?

^ Actually, are those numbers for acceptance rate or percentage of accepted student body? 33% acceptance rate for international student looks unreasonably high.

The UC schools call the required courses for admission A-G. A=History, B=English, C=Math, D=Science, E=Language, F=Art, G=College Prep Elective

For example, if a student consistently failed gym, it wouldn’t impact their UC GPA since gym is not an A-G course. Some colleges re-calculate with fewer classes than above, such as only A-E. I understand that UC also weights AP and UC-approved honors classes, and does not include +/- grades in their re-calculation

Acceptance rate – 33% of international applicants were accepted.

I got into Pomona early with a 3.65 UW. But I also ranked in the top 5%…

I lived in California too. In recent times, there is only a small disadvantage being out of state. UCLA and Cal are both hitting 30% out of state versus 10% about ten years ago. The academic credentials for out of state students is slightly higher. The gap used to be enormous.

I also went to a very competitive high school that the UC’s are very aware of. We sent 33 out of 530 to Ivy League Plus schools (Ivy League, Northwestern, Chicago, Stanford, MIT, Cal Tech) in 2012 at my alma mater public open-enrollment HS.

I know someone at my school with a 3.7 uw who got into dartmouth

My brother got into Columbia ED. He had a 3.75 by the time he graduated but it was lower when he was applying, probably around 3.7. He also got into UChicago.

He is a URM and an athlete, but not recruited. His SAT was 2110, 800s on US History and Chemistry, 650 on Math 2. Ranked in the top 5% of his class.

His ECs included TASP, Model UN, NHS. SGA, and Track where he holds multiple state titles.

Bumping for interest

Zeesus, did that person have any hooks?

@Donivrian
Thanks for sharing that info, that’s very encouraging. Did your son go to a fancy private school though, or respectable public?

I was reading an article (forgot the name) that talked about a student who got into Stanford with a few B’s (meaning that she probably had a 3.6-3.9 GPA). Her EC’s were outstanding though. She developed a curriculum that was adopted by multiple states.

What I’m saying is, it’s not just GPA that determines admissions. You can definitely get in with a GPA that isn’t a perfect 4.0, but there has to be some part of your application that is outstanding.

Congratulation to your daughter! Thank you for sharing your story and providing insight to those college bound.

@fReMoNtPeA May I ask since your grades were pretty average, what do you think got you accepted into UCLA? I really want to get into UCLA, but my gpa is average and so is my SAT score.

This thread is 3 years old.

Just want to share that URMs with that GPA range are not getting into top schools without the help of stellar scores or ECs. Maybe that happened in the 90’s. Not now.
