Was just wondering whether you intend to: 1. just use it as part of activity list and subject of most significant activity essay? 2. build one of the major essays around it? 3. send a dvd of a performance as a supplement? 4. send copies of reviews?

If it matters, this is about my kid who is not (currently) looking to major in this field but it is a very strong EC for him. Our counselor advises to build one of the big essays around it, but I haven't asked about the idea of sending a dvd or reviews yet... Thanks.

Older S had done a lot of new media including creating a website and being webmaster of a local professional publication starting at age 12. He included a link to the website and a letter of recommendation from the publisher with his applications.

Unless your student is truly outstanding – as in being a professional actor – I don’t think it’s a good idea to include a DVD. I don’t think that the busy admissions officers are likely to look at it. Similarly, I don’t think it’s a good idea to include reviews unless he did something professional. If that was the case, include one review if the colleges allow the submission of extra material.

If he writes an essay about his performance experience, he should make sure the essay reflects his personality and isn’t just a theater version of the “My big game” cliched essay that admissions officers don’t like.

Thanks. I looked at the theater forum but that seems to be for kids who want to major in theater, so not sure it works the same way if it is an important EC but not the focus of your application? But I will ask there as well!

Well, when you watched it (try to think from an adcoms POV), were you surprised and somewhat astounded by its quality? Could you picture it as some type of actual professional work? If yes, definitely send it in. When adcoms receive this kinda supplement stuff their expectations are already set super high, so it has to be good but it doesn;t have to be necessarily “professionally done” as Northmom said.
or actually try to find a professional film or publisher guy and ask him to review the tape!
