Anyone's standards too high?

Are your parents like "HYP or home country"?

nope...my parents know that almost any uni in America is better than the ones in my country

Pretty much...their thinking (and I completely agree), is if we're going to dish out $50 000 per year, it may as well be for one of the top schools in the US. Otherwise, I might as well stay in Canada and go to one of the top schools here, where I can get practically full-ride on merit scholarships.

to the OP:
Yeah! My parent are the same... I was like "Dad, I've heard that Northwestern's Econ program was..." . Dad: "Northwestern? NORTHWESTERN? You're kidding right? It's an Ivy, Duke, U Chicago, or go to _____ univ at home. I will not pay for some low tier schools!"

Sry NUers. I really love it, but azn parents... just unbeatable-_-

^ haha that's exactly how ALL azn parents are like. Talk about LACs with them, and watch them go crazy mad because of the simple fact that you are not even trying to shoot for Ivies.

Not really...I told my parents I'll be applying to LAC's when the time comes and they're like 'Apply to and go wherever you want...it's your choice'

I also consider that rather than going to a not-so-great-but-expensive US university, you should better remain in your own country, or look for studying abroad somewhere where costs are not so huge. But I don't consider only Ivies to be the best universities. Many LACs are also great, as well as universities like Chicago, Tufts or even Northwestern.

'Apply to and go wherever you want...it's your choice'.. my Dad said pretty much the same. He just added.. "Do remember that I won't be paying a single penny for any college in US or any other country other than India"..
Such is life dearies.. :'(

Me too apply where ever you want but you should get good Aid. thats what my dad said.

My father wants me to apply to almost all the good state universities and that is very irritating since none of them are on the commonpp.
He says that in the very big student body it will be easier for me to fit in. I think its because he was at one of them and knows lots of people at them.
Plus he thinks i probably won't get into the ivy's (i kind of agree) :(

"nope...my parents know that almost any uni in America is better than the ones in my country"
my father's exactly like that- he told me that the faculty at university of Arizona will be better then the one i'll get at Delhi University.

On the other hand my best friend with a 2240 sat score and brilliant percentages in school is applying to HYP+uchicago+brown+williams
and her father is ready to pay 20k$ but only if she gets into one of them- otherwise she goes to DU.
her thinking is that she is not yet ready o go toAmerica but will go if she gets into one of them because otherwise it woud be 'utterly dumb not to go'.

I agree but personally i am going to go to any University in top 50 which takes me with aid!

Not really. My dad was very open-minded. He practically didn't know anything about American colleges at first and he started researching when I was applying for schools. He wanted to know more about the schools I was applying but he didn't suggest or object anything. It was totally up to me.

The worst AZN parents are those who know some but think they know a lot. There are also those who use their kids to brag in front of relatives/friends and that's why they make sure their kids go to schools people know about to satisfy their own ego.

I am willing to go to any LAC. I'm sure they're much better than any university in my country, and the experience there must be unforgettable.

Two more months left.
