Thank you so much for that long and thoughtful post!
I’m going to NU next year and it helped!

yes thank you for that!

This may not be the place to put this, but I have a question for those Biological Science students. When I went on a visit to Northwestern, I talked with a WCAS adviser and he told me about how many biology students take the biology 101 course at Harvard over the summer! He said that it is a better quality class (obviously), and that it’s beneficial to take it there. This sounds like such an awesome opportunity! Is it true that some students do this?? And if so, when and how can one set this up?

Yes, I did this, but I’m pretty sure if you’re a bio major you can’t do this. I’m not sure if it’s a better quality class, but it’s cheaper to do over the summer at harvard instead of nu. I didn’t find it particularly better, different style, but not any better or worse.

If you’re going to NU, you might want to lose the “(obviously)”-attitude about ‘better’ schools… or else you’ve got ivy-league reject written all over your face.

Haha I’m sorry, the adviser just made it sound like it was SOO much better. I wouldn’t know. I kind of just assumed he knew what he was talking about. But thank you for the insight.

What major are you? And why can’t bio majors do it?

haha, no problem. The thing about advisors is - have they taken those classes? Did they go to a school like NU or Harvard? Probably not… i’m not ripping on our staff because they are great, but there are a couple of advisors I’ve run into who have an air of confidence about certain areas they have no legitimacy. As with most things, take it with a grain of salt.

I was doing bio for pre-med, not a major requirement. Bio majors can’t do it because there is a bio sequence for that. I think you might be able to get an exception made, but i’m not sure how successful that is. Maybe if you switch majors late, they’d accept that… not sure

I love the info guys. Also, most you guys are going straight to a job right? Does grad school come into play? I always assumed I’d go to that. Is that the norm? haha I might sound stupid…

hi,
First of all, congrats to those who are now northwestern wildcats!
i have one question.

Since NU starts around mid-late september, what should i do for the 4 months of summer??!
–in order to prepare for college

Thanks.

Learn the rules of football and start following the wildcats- here are some good links to start:

^ definitely agree with the above… learn to love NU football (and basketball or NU sports in general).

Get a summer job, go travel, volunteer, do something cool. Do not be a bum and complain about waiting for school to start. Also you can do pre-new student week programs, I’d highly recommend those as well.

Or organize your own area meet-ups like I did. Works great. Gives you something to do, and you know people on campus when you get there.

Do try and be busy - it’s very long waiting to go to school weeks later than all your friends!

Second whar Arbiter said. My S is a freshman from CA. Besides the alumni group sponsored get together (I heard of at least 3 in CA), incoming SoCal frosh also had numerous get togethers, usually at the beach. I believe CA has the second largest enrollment at NU, after IL (or maybe that’s just for the class of 2014.)

One of the guys he met ended up being on his same floor in Hinman. Another was going to be his NU assigned roommate, then NU switched for no apparent reason, and now he has a roommate from NY, which is fine with him. Of course, the students from the snow belt have to be jealous this December. The SoCal kids left behind 15 degrees and blizzard to arrive to 85 degrees and sunny this weekend. I invited my S to let anyone he liked to tag along with him.
