I don't think Northwestern Prep is an approved prep school for USMA. I could be wrong, so you might want to check it out. If it is not an approved prep school for AOG cadets, I would stick with those that are approved as they have developed a relationship with USMA. I also think WaMom is correct in her belief that prep school students are not academically deficient...

The approved colleges for AOGs are Marion Military Institute, New Mexico Military Institute, Wentworth Military Academy, and Georgia Military College.

ya now you pipe in

Mulan - I was referring to a "sponsored" AOG civil prep, which means the candidate is selected by the Assoc. of Graduates, and given a partial scholarship to attend one of the military junior colleges (see Triggs post for the list from this year-could always change). These sponsored preps do not have a guarantee of admission for the coming year but they do not compete in the same candidate pool for an appointment. To get their appointment they have to get another nomination, pass the CFA again, do the application packet again, retake the SAT/ACT, and do well academically at the college they attend.

Sounds like you would be a "self-prep" like some of my son's classmates at NMMI. The self-preps take the same classes and have to do all the same steps as the sponsored preps, the difference is the self-preps are back in the national competitive pool as you were this year. It should help you next year if you can show you can handle the workload and environment at NMMI or MMI.

It's never been a workload problem for me...it was more the culture shock for me coming from a Very competitive high school (academically and athletically) and arriving at a school on the complete other end of the spectrum. Suffice to say, I did not handle the change very well.

Yeap, self prep, or ROTC at a different college. I want to continue my internship in politics.

Y'all, of course, are right about NW Prep. I forgot what forum I was in!

That's right Spidermom. GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY!

BLKnightMulan...I would call and talk to the folks at NMMI and Marion about the SAP Programs at their schools. Ask about the success rate of their non-AOG sponsored cadets getting an appointment to West Point. Ask them to sell you on their school and why going to their school will help you get into the Class of 2011 at West Point. If visiting the schools is an option, do that. As I said before both are in rural spots that may take some time getting used to. Just remember the purpose of your time is at either school is not to party or shop, it is to get into West Point. It sounds like you are dedicated to getting into West Point and I think they do award points for perseverence. Good luck...

Guess which school: How do you like your enchiladas? What would you like with your grits?

Oh Gee...for me now it's 2012...I live like 45min driving from USMA and I've got work! lol. I'm definately not a a party girl and as for shopping, mommy still buys my clothes because I had other things to concentrate on.

Rural I can handle. I live in a town that doesn't even have a McDonald's and just recently started adding sidewalks away from the little center of town area. The thing I couldn't handle in college- they don't call it Groovy UV for nothing.

As for enchiladas and grits, I've never eaten, don't know what they are...if you haven't guess I'm asian! I eat fish, fruits, and fried rice (seriously).

So...is it south of the Mason-Dixon line?

Enchiladas would be NMMI (Roswell, New Mexico) and grits would be MMI (Marion, Alabama)! :D

Mulan -
If you go to NMMI be ready for lots of mexican food and if you choose MMI you will learn all about southern food, including grits. Yes, MMI is south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Marion may be about the size of your hometown. There is only one fast food restaurant in town which is a Hardees. Have you ever heard of a breakfast pork chop? There is, however, an Asian restaurant fairly close to campus. We live in Texas so we are not strangers to enchiladas or grits. My son, however, will ahve to adjust to the snow and cold at West Point next year, which I fear is going to be a bigger adjustment. I would encourage you to call Col. Bauer at MMI and ask your questions about Marion. He is the West Point coordinator and a wonderful individual.

I haven't heard of a breakfast pork chop... hmm. I don't trust any asian restaurants that aren't in places with high asian populations- Cantonese, the foodies of the Chinese...I'm also horribly spoiled cuisine-wize because my paternal grandpa used to be a chef.

Food aside, prep school sounds rather intimidating all around. I'm mostly mulling over ROTC vs prep school because at least with ROTC I can start as a sophomore using AP credits only having minimized "lost" time.

Well you can dual track here and get a commission in two years if West Point doesn't pan out. Also the Chinese place isn't too terrible, though quite gringo-ized.

Issue with me- I'd like to remain premed. Premed in two years is impossible and Frijoles- which school do you refer to?

West Point now wants me to redo my SATs despite having a rather respectable score (96/97th percentile)...soo looks like I gotta max EVERYTHING, haha.

Sorry, I'm at Marion, but you can dual track at either NMMI or MMI. They told the people who had to retake it here they needed to be above 600 in math and english at least, not sure what percentile that is but thats the magic number according to them. The advantage of coming to a place like Marion will be your adviser. Ours is LTC Bauer, and he is in constant contact with WP and will fight for you as best he could. Coming from Marion this year we have 20 people with appointments, still waiting on one. Of the non-sponsored kids that actually did the application and all of the work, one already got his and another will probably be going USMAPS next year.

I'm def over 600 for all of the SAT stuff...I'm not sure why they want me to take it again. I was also 98th % overall for ACTs. Ahhhh out of high school I had everything and I took it for granted...600s prob puts someone in 85%.

How is Marion? I already started my application with NMMI and so far they've been very supportive/helpful.

Its really not that bad at all, alot depends on your company and who your leadership is. Its no West Point but all the teachers are here to get you to WP and make sure that you do well there. It is within reasonable driving distance if three major cities...which we take advantage of nearly every weekend. As a female you will get your own room, which is nice because they are quite small. Promotion will come fairly quickly if you are squared away enough...we have two AOGs that are already captains. Anything specific?

frijoles- how many kids are at Marion and what are some stats about ethnicity/gender? I was at UVM as seemingly the only asian female. I saw one walking around once, and a family of prospectives one other time...I felt perpetually alienated on campus- I'm a pretty observant asian if you could call it that.

well you would probably be the only Asian female, but that would probably be the same at NMMI, there are however quite a few males, my room mate is asian and laughing as we speak. in fact im the guy in the room two down from me has a rice cooker and a hot plate and we usually eat pretty well.

the corps here is surprisingly diverse for where we are, and is supposed to double in size next year so there is no telling what it will be like

My parents seriously don't want me to go to prep school and will not listen to me and do not want to hear anything USMA has to tell them. I'm not sure how to break it to them that I am taking NMMI into serious consideration...

I've had a pretty bad history with my parents not listening to me and them making decisions for me that have had disastrous results...I know they try to make the "best" decisions FOR me BUT...from their perspectives and what they want me to do as opposed to what I wish to do.

Not so sure about Marion...I'm feeling pretty afraid and confused right now.

Mulan, my heart goes out to you. I've been on both sides of this situation and it's not fun. If it would ever help me have a former female officer and current mom of a prepster talk to your folks, don't hesitate to email or PM me.
