Hey if any of you prospective candidates out there have any questions on the application process, CFA, being a NIMMI prep, beast, or being a plebe at West Point post them here and I will get back to you ASAP. I am part of the class of 2011 and was a prep at New Mexico Military Institute last year. Take care and good luck.

How do you apply prep and when? I'm very interested in getting an appointment, and I'll go anywhere along the lines from civil prep, to prep school itself. Did you apply for AOG civil prep scholarship when you applied to the academy.. or did you do it later?

Airborne101 -

How is it going so far? Please tell me West Point is a whole lot better than NMMI! My daughter is at MMI. ;)

What are you taking for classes? How was Beast? Did coming from NMMI make things easier for you?

Mister Sinister: Is your question a test? Do you like asking several different people the same question just to see if the answer is different?

Airborne101 - go ahead and answer him.

what was your stat airborne? just curious

Mister Sinister- I didn't apply to be a Civil Prep I merely signed off on a thing that said I am interested, when I applied. I was then nominated by my admissions officer and then accepted into the program.

JustAMomOf4- West Point is a whole heck of a lot better than NMMI. Being a RAT sucks more than being a plebe. I am taking a lot of the same but I am taking yearling social sciences, ie. American Politics and next semester Geography, and next year cow German I plan to double major in large part because of my NIMMI schooling. Beast was pretty easy I got smoked a ton more at NIMMI. Going to NIMMI helped a lot not only because of the extra experience in the academic field and knowing what to expect on R-day, but also an extra year of maturity, ROTC didn't hurt either. All in all things are going pretty good just finding that battle rhythm and going with the flow.

petyflow- What do you mean by my stat?

IS being a Rat more tough than being a Plebe?

I think he means statistics that got you into West Point, like GPA, class rank, AP classes, EC's, CFA score, etc.

Well... The thing is... If I dont get an appointment, I want to do everything in my power to try to get into the civil prep program. I just don't want to show that Im TOO interested in Civil prep to the admissions officer until AFTER I know for sure I won't get an appointment. If I show to much interest before, it could ruin my chances of getting a straight appointment.

Do not worry about that - they do not pick people for Civil prep like that.
In fact some kids who are offered civil prep early in the process are then offered appointments later.
They only offer you Civil prep or USMAPS if they are fairly sure you won't get an appointment - I think they start making offers in Feb or March.

My daughter got her "Official" offer in May - I know of a girl who was offered USMAPS in June after graduation.

Go ahead and show your interest -

Mister Sinister- Being a plebe is tougher, but being a Rat sucks more, if that makes sense. A lot of the things one does at NIMMI like Rat walking and having mandatory basketball games that no one knows about until dinner the night before a big scheduled test, does not happen at West Point. This is not to say we don't have dumb things happen but its a lot less frequent.

Being willing to commit to the prep program tells the committee that you really want to go to West Point. This will only work in your favor. If you don't get in to either programs you could always go as a self-prep or apply again next year while going to school or doing ROTC.

Oh I see. So on the application, there is an area where you can say that you are interested in usmaps and civil prep?

In the booklet you received - I am pretty sure there is a tear out post card that asks if you would be interested in a prep program. Fill it out and send it in.
Sending it in does not negatively affect your chance of an appointment.

Hi,
I was wondering when it is a good time to contact the school to let them know I want to become a candidate? I am currently a junior in high school
Also my high school does not give class ranks, I know that is a question on the application, any idea on what to do for that?

Teebo, It is not too early to contact West Point about your interest. Go to http://admissions.usma.edu/startyoung.cfm and click the link on the right to be placed on USMA's mailing list. The fall of your junior year is also a great time to visit (if you can). The admissions briefing and cadet tour are very informative.

Your guidance counselor can give West Point an estimate of where you stand in your class. Not having a "real" class rank will not be a problem. Just do your best this year to keep your grades up!

Teebo, in addition to contacting admissions you should apply for the summer leadership seminar held in June. Usually the application comes out in December or January so be watching the website for it: http://admissions.usma.edu/moreinfo/summer.cfm.

thank you both of you.

Teebo - as soon as you express interest to admissions, they put you on a mailing list. You will receive info from West Point and may also be invited to a candidate information session - if you can make any of these they are well worth attending.
Also, admissions can tell you who your MALO (Military Academy Liason Officer) is and you can contact that person - MALO's are Active duty or Reserve officers than help the admissions team.

Also, if you are an athlete and interested in competing for Army - go to the Athletic website and email the coach.

Thanks will do.
I have a few more questions, sorry they arn't in any particular oder.
-How is student life? I know is restricted compared to most colleges, but like is there free time at night or on weekends to relax, read watch tv etc?
-How are cadets matched up to the rest of the armed forces? Are they considered lower than private? or not even scaled on a system like that
-what is the deal with outside communication? Are cell phones, email and/or instant messaging opened to cadets during the normal school year?
thanks again for all the help

i read somewhere that cadets lie between enlisted and officer. could be very mistaken though. just a friendly bump.

Teebo- as far as how we rank it kinda depends on the situation your in. Under the Uniform code of military conduct we are treated as officers. So don't mess up. Right now plebes get paid (including meals and housing) comparable to an E-1 however we only pocket $175 a month. As far as how we are treated it depends on the cadet if training in the Army you still got to earn the respect of the other soldiers. Kinda of a grey area so to speak.

The last two years at West Point you will have the opportunity to leave almost every weekend (Fir sties have unlimited passes). As under class you leave less. But so far this year I have only spent one week end in the barracks. I just got back from a staff ride to Antietam, transportation, lodging and $30 for food was provided. We left Friday and toured the battlefield with three military history professors.

As far as outside communications you can have cell phone and e-mail, IM depends upon company and/or brigade sop for plebes.

Hope that helps.
