So I am going to be junior next year and I am contemplating if I should take AP chem or AP bio. I want to become a veterinarian so I I did my research and most people considered AP bio to be the better choice. The AP science teachers are all mediocre so I’m not worried about getting a bad teacher. I ended up getting A’s in both semesters for chem and bio (different years of course), however I feel like AP bio would be more beneficial for my major and also because I will be taking APES. I understand that I probably have to take organic chemistry or another type of chem in college, but I’ll be focusing more on bio. I also understand that AP chem has more math and formulas and AP bio is very in-depth with a lot of memorization.
If I take AP chem junior year, I was going to take dual enrollment bio senior year, but if I take AP bio junior year, I will not be taking AP chem senior year. I personally feel like AP bio is the better choice but I need a third person point of view of my situation.
Thank you!
I would probably do AP Biology junior year and then AP Chemistry senior year. I know you said you wouldn’t take AP Chemistry senior year, but chemistry is still related to your intended career and may help you later in college. Both APs are important with regards to veterinary medicine.
Though, I’m really questioning whether you need to take APES next year. It’s not related to your intended career and it is considered an “AP Light.” Many colleges don’t even offer credit for a 5 on the exam. It also isn’t necessary to take two AP science classes in the same year. Unless you really like environmental science, I really wouldn’t take it.
Thanks for the reply! It’s really helpful. I will think about taking ap chem senior year. I’m only taking APES because I’m taking Spanish 3 during the summer but will not be going up to Spanish 4. I heard APES was fairly easy and also it is very interesting to me. Most of the AP classes I will be taking are easy A’s therefore that’s why I will be choosing between the hard science classes: AP bio or AP chem.
This comment was really helpful to me. As a incoming junior I also faced a similar dilemma. I realized that I worry too much about my future when I haven’t even decided on a major that I want to take. Therefore, I think I will take AP Bio and just go with the flow until I actually find what I want to do.
P.S. my advice to sun1009 would be to take AP Bio your Junior Year.
