Hi, I am going to be a senior and I am trying to decide between chemistry or AP Biology. I took marine biology freshman year and Biology sophomore year so would it be beneficial to also have AP biology for college applications? Ap Biology is also a sophomore class so I would not have my peers. I have never done chemistry so I would like to take it this year but I could also take it at my community college online. I can do both but to keep a balance I rather not have two classes with the same teacher and keep the option of doing part-time running start. I am applying to college for environmental science/ policy. Any advice would be helpful!
Take chemistry. Colleges want to see students take bio, chem, and physics in HS.
Should I consider still taking both or would it not matter?
What does the rest of your schedule look like?
I am taking Spanish 4 or conversational Spanish at my college, Honors current world Problems, Ap calc AB, American literature at the college, and I am finishing .5 of ap government online.
I would take both if you think you can swing it, assuming you’ve already taken a physics course. If not, take H chem and physics.
Yes take chem!!
High school is not the time to specialize but to cover all the bases. Take chem (and physics if you can). If you’re not aiming for supercompetitive colleges you may be OK without high school physics. As for studying environmental science, chem is the building block of it all. Chemistry is best done as a lab class so I can’t imagine how it works online.
I’m surprised that your high school guidance counselor didn’t insist that you diversify your science classes.
I have taken physics. We have one counselor for the entire school so It is almost impossible to get specialized help in choosing courses.

Hi I have one more question. Would it be beneficial to take ap bio if I have already done two years? I also have dual enrollment general bio that I could do instead. Is one better than the other through the college admission perspective?
Have you taken any AP science courses? If not, I would add AP bio if you think you can handle to lab courses at once (it can be a lot of work).
As to whether AP or DE is “better,” it depends on what kinds of colleges you are targeting. Usually state schools are more willing to accept DE credits. IMO, I would do what’s most convenient for your schedule.
Chem and take Physics next year
Unless I read this wrong, OP is going into senior year.
@momofsenior1 Though I plan to go into environmental science/policy I have not taken any ap sciences. I have done apush ap lang, aplit , and I am finishing apgov online. I am currently thinking of taking the general bio becauae it willl be done in the winter(before college ap go out) but the problem is the 9 hour class time per week. I am planning on going out of state likely unless I decide on the university of Washington. Would more selective schools such as brown, dartmouth, and usc prefer DE or AP?
It you are planning on selective OOS schools, I would choose AP. It’s more universally accepted and a few less hoops to jump through to get credit.
@momofsenior1 Thanks for the advice. It would make it simpler to do that. My other reasoning for doing dual enrollment is it gives me more flexibility to takeDE classes throughout the year and I heard the teacher is excellent.
I took AP Bio when I was a sophomore a couple years ago and it wasn’t that bad, just a lot of labs, however if you plan on going into environmental science I recommend taking AP Chem because it’ll be more useful. AP credits are great for college and look good on applications!! Good luck in whatever you choose, you’ll do great
@ramenenthusiast Hi, I definitely decided to take chemistry( ap not offered) but Im still unsure of ap bio because there is a lot of overlap in the assignments and projects I did in regular bio sophomore year. Do you believe that apbio will benefit me in applications being the only ap science at my school or will it be insignificant due to me already taking normal biology and marine biology?
@jasminesky321 I think it will benefit in your applications because since it’s the only ap science course offered at your school, it shows you’re up to the challenge of taking ap level courses in high school. It is similar to normal bio of course but in my opinion it gave a lot more depth into the concepts and was a lot more challenging but it’s worth it.
What about the DE Biology class? Is it taught at a college?
