AP Bio-Subject Tests Freshman Year?

Hey, hs class of '21 freshie checking in. Currently I’m taking a year long course in regular bio at my hs (no honors is offered). I plan on taking a one semester course in advanced biology next year, but I asked my GC and they aren’t sure if it’ll be held first or second semester yet. I talked to the department head at my school and he advised against self-studying AP biology this year (not offered as a course at my hs), instead waiting to do it my sophomore year. I didn’t ask about taking the SAT subject test on it this year, but I was hoping to do that as well. I started an online AP bio course but I am unsure on whether to continue or take the teacher’s advice, as well as wondering if I should take the subject test at the end of this year or wait until next year. Any help is appreciated!

P.S. yes, I would really like to self study this course, as I am hoping to get into a top rated pre-med BS/MD program, or a BS pre-med track.

Take a practice SAT Bio test near the end of the year, the study up on any gaps. The SAT subject is targeted at kids who have taken one year of high school bio. It does not require AP or extensive self study for a good student who did well in high school bio.

thanks! would you recommend continuing with the online AP course and taking the exam at the end of the year? @VickiSoCal

At my kid’s school, AP Bio has both bio and chem as prerequisites. You may find it helpful to wait until you’re enrolled in chemistry, at least.
