I would drop both Stat and Comp Sci before you forgo Calculus AB. There are so many variations of statistics courses that you might as well leave that for Stern. Same for Comp Sci unless you are particularly interested.
Calculus is core.

Yeah, I agree that you should talk with your guidance counselor. Although calc is important, I think stats is super important for business. And maybe its just me or my school, but stats isnt as easy as people say it is. In fact, I think its pretty hard. If I were you, Id take calc over the summer at CC and take stats at school.
@misschoding thanks for responding. Thats probably what I am going to do. I just hope taking Calc at a community college doesn’t look bad.
@SternBusiness no problem! good luck!
Well for most business degrees, you need at least one course of calculus and statistics. I would take the CC calc class if it transfers to NYU as calc 1 or something like that, and take AP Stat senior year. Taking CC calc over AP certainly wouldn’t put you at a disadvantage if AP calc was replaced by AP Stat. Plus you have the possibility of getting even more credit that way.
@jpchem Thanks thats probably what I will do. How do I know if it transfers? Sorry, I just really don’t know. Also, technically could the class be put on my HS transcript?
Read the links in #19 for NYU specific information on transfer credit.
You should check their transfer credit website, if it’s a general calculus class, should transfer at almost all state colleges because CC and state colleges have similar numbering systems for their classes. Also, you could, and that’s something that you should check with your counselor. Most colleges accepts C’s for transfer credit, but that’s not necessarily something you want on your transcript, so it depends on how you do as well.
1°Even if you take statistics in HS, you must take it in college, and in particular calculus-based stats, which is very much unlike AP Stats.
2° Even if you take AP Calc AB, DO NOT ask for credit and retake it at NYU, like most students there do. If you “skip ahead”, and have forgotten a little in the intervening 3 months, you’ll be at a significant disadvantage. Stern is math-heavy, so you’ll want to start with Calc 1 to have strong foundations.
3° If you really want to take a class this summer, take stats and keep Calc for the year as it’ll be easier to digest stats in 6 weeks, than calc. Calc AB lasts 10 months, 5 hours a week or so = 200 hours. This will be compressed into about 60 hours once you’re in college, ie., it’s very fast-paced. Now, these 60 hours wouldn’t be spread over 4 months, but over 6 weeks of so. In other words, you’d cover 6 weeks’ worth of calc AB in a week. A week’s worth of material PER DAY. It’s very, very, very challenging, especially for a class as cumulative and need as much processing as as Calculus.
@MYOS1634 Will it hurt me in admissions if I just take Calc 1 at a Community college, instead of Calc AB at my highschool.
No because Calc 1 is Calc AB in an accelerated (college-paced) format, ie., covering the same content in 3 hours a week for 4 months with lots of personal work vs. 5 hours for 10 months with lots of steps to make sure you understand. So if you can take Calc1 and do well, it’ll look good.
Then you’ve got to get “really, really competitive” too.
@HormonallyAReck Calc AB is on the Math SL exam, Calc BC, which is equivalent to Calc I and II in college courses, is on the HL exam. Not sure about the options though
