So if I take AP Calc BC my junior year, do I still have to take math my senior year? My dream school is stanford but I plan on taking another course instead of AP Stats
Its honestly your choice. I know high school students who are in graduate level math (which is like 4 years above BC) so I don’t think it really matters XD.
I didn’t get into Stanford, but I took AP Calc BC junior year. Was able to skip to calc 3 at my local CC. Never have to take a stats class. I’m an engineering major.
AP Stats will be pretty useless if you’re already at AP Calc BC.
Well that’s not true, AP Stats is a fundamental class every major should take, just because of the topics it covers applies to almost every STEM Career there is. AP Stats teaches you topics you have never learned like hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and etc, all essential to data analysis that you dont learn in any other class.
It depends upon the college, but if the STEM major requires stats, it will likely be calc-based, which AP Stats is not. Not that AP Stats isn’t an OK introduction, but for a kid that’s taking BC as a junior, it might not be the best choice, although I doubt that AP Stats versus MVC will be a make-or-break admissions-wise.
However, the OP is contemplating no math, which I think is a mistake.
AP Stats is a good intro class if it is taught properly. You don’t need to understand the calc-based stats to understand stats. It is usually the fundamental concepts that are difficult to understand, not the calc part. It is the underlying assumptions and approximations that most people don’t get.
No matter what you should take statistics in college - AP stats will be an introduction but the class is useful in many ways and good for the ‘relevant courses’ rubric on your resume.
That being said, if you’re applying to Stanford, you should take a math class. If you can take dual enrollment classes, I’d recommend Discrete Math. It’ll be different from what you’ve done so far. Exception: if you’re applying for a Humanities major or Humanities Core, you’d be better off taking a classical literature and a philosophy class through dual enrollment.
Disagree. The topics in those classes are super different. AP stats is super applicable
Older thread now. And OP is gone.
Applicable? It’s considered an easier AP. It does not replace a rigorous choice. And for engineering or CS at a tippy top, it’s not about, “I might need it during college.” OP is talking psych or ES. But will still need to compete for an admit.
@lookingforward I was referring to @ProfessorPlum168 comment about calc vs stats, but the reply button didn’t highlight the message. I apologize for the miscommunication.
