I am currently a junior in high school and am in Pre Calc. As of now I am planning on taking AP Calc AB next year, however i would like to take BC if could. My school does offer a BC class, but is is only for students who have taken AB before then. I know I have to option of taking AB over the summer and then taking BC in that class, but do you think it would be possible to take the regular AB class at my high school but study for BC on my own? or would it be better to try and take AB over the summer? My teacher says it would be possible but a summer class would be much better.

Thanks for the help

i would recommend taking AB during the summer and then BC during the year. I’m also a junior this year and I took Calc AB last year and I’m currently taking BC. Basically you’re gonna need a good foundation in AB to understand and be familiar with some of the topics in BC - mostly differentiation with respect to a variable. I think it would be very tough to take them in the same year as BC requires a solid foundation from AB. Personally, I think it would be best to take AB during the summer… It’s gonna be very tough to do both in the same year.

Are you taking physics next year? I hear that helps. Also, be thankful your school allows you to take summer classes for credit.

Thanks for the advice. Ive heard that from other people too. I am not sure about the summer classes will work out but i think I can do it. I will be doing AP physics along with it, so i will see if that helps.

don’t do BC on your own.

I’m a Junior in AP Calc AB right now.

Let me just say, that I do not think it would be very wise to take AP Calc BC on your own. While it is very similar to AB, the material is very difficult. If I didn’t have such a great teacher (she really is amazing; most of her students get 5s), I don’t even know if I’d be able to pass the exam.

AP Calculus is one of those courses where you just need a teacher. I would take AB over the summer real quickly so you can move on to BC for the regular school year if I were you. (Although I’m a bit confused as to why you must take AB first; they are practically the same course until the last quarter or so, if I remember correctly).

Good luck with whatever route you take.
