Ap calculus AB or Ap statistics

Hello,
I am currently a junior in high school registering for my senior year classes. I alread have almost all my graduation requirements nd i am already taking 3 AP classes this year. I want to take AP statistics next year because it’s easier but my teacher recommended me to take AP calculus AB but i feel like I won’t be able to handle it, although i am doing good in pre-calc this year i still fear AP Calculus and i also want an easier class because i am going to have an internship and half schedule next year. And do you also advise me to take 4 years of science instead of the 3 required for graduation. Help me!!

Intended major in college?

If it needs calculus, high school calculus AB will be a gentler introduction than college calculus.

Which sciences have you taken?

Intended major is nursing

I have taken biology, chemistry honors and Ap Physics

And all the math required? See what your targets ask for, for an admit. Then see what courses they require for the degree.
Some say calc isn’t required for nursing/BSN. That stats is. But you need to dig for what matters and what you’ll study, at your targets.

Agree that you should do some research into what courses are needed for nursing programs and if calc is required in nursing programs you plan to apply to.

If non-AP calc is offered at your HS that may be a good option for you.

For nursing, AP Stats would be a better choice, but you DO need a science, preferably 2 ie., AP Chem and Anatomy&Physiology (assuming you’ve taken one each from bio, chem, physics, honors or regular).
I’d also recommend taking AP Psychology + Spanish and English.

What nursing schools are you targeting? if say you are targeting a direct entry program like Case Western, what math are your peers taking? Are they taking Calc?

Definitely take 4 years of science.

If you are admitting to a nursing school, are you going to look for people who are challenging themselves or the ones taking the easier way out?

Students preparing for nursing wouldn’t be taking Calculus but statistics and AP stats would be the most advanced form unless you can dual enroll somewhere that offers biostatistics, which would be the best math class for a future nursing major.
If you can double up in science (AP Bio +A&P) it can be useful.

My daughter, a current freshman in a fairly competitive direct-admit nursing program, took the following math and sciences:

Honors algebra 1 & 2
Honors geometry
Honors pre-calc
AP Stats
AP Calc

Honors freshman science
Honors bio
Honors chem
Anatomy
DE Physics

She has to take a statistics for healthcare class junior year so AP Stats will be useful there. Depending on the program, you might be able to knock out that requirement with AP credit. Calculus comes in handy just having a higher-level math understanding.

But, weirdly enough, the class that taught her the most was that physics class. Easily the hardest, and most frustrating, class of her high school career. But she learned perseverance. The only program I know off hand that requires physics for nursing admission is UConn.

I honestly think taking AP Calc and DE Physics made her stand out a bit. But I guess we’ll never know, other than she got into her first choice.

AP stats would be better for nursing along with other classes such as AP Chem, AP Bio, and Phys/Anatomy if your school offers it.
