AP Calculus Credit

Hello,

I've searched through the forum, and I still cannot find a definite answer to my concern. I am currently a freshman at UCR. When I came here, I had AP credits for Calculus BC, which allowed me to skip Calculus 9A and 9B (equivalent to Math I and Math II?) and proceed on taking Calculus 9C (sequences, Taylor's series).

However, many Medical Schools require a year of Calculus and Statistics, and they don't accept AP credits. Specifically, the UCR/UCLA Thomas Haider Program requires "Mathematics--one year of college mathematics to include introductory calculus and statistics (MATH 009A, MATH 009B, STAT 100A, or equivalent)."

In my case, is it ok to take Calculus 9C and Calculus 10A (Multivariable Calculus) and count those as "introductory calculus" for the pre-med requirement? Is it necessary to retake Calculus 9A and 9B for which I already have AP credits?

You’d be much better off emailing UCR directly. They are one of the stricter schools on the use of AP’s IIRC. For the vast majority of schools you are good to go.

My kid used her BC Calc AP credit and only took stats. She found plenty of schools to apply to at all levels of selectivity but UCR wasn’t one of them. It was a non-issue for her. Even med schools that don’t like AP credits are usually more liberal on Math and usually upper-levels count for everything at most schools. UCR may be the exception to that rule so don’t count on “usually” applying to them. Good luck.
