AP Calculus VS AP Stastics: Which one should I take?

Hi! I’m Caitlyn, and I’m currently a sophomore. My school just distributed our course cards last week. I have been debating about which courses I should and can take. Next year, I am surely going to take AP Calculus AB, but I was wondering whether I should take AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics in senior year. Many of the people I ask say they will take AP Stats senior year, but I really want to orient the courses I take in high school toward the career I want (Biomedical Engineering or Medicine) and show colleges that I am working towards and focusing on a goal. AP Calculus BC seems to be the logical answer, right? Lately, I have been hearing that statistics is a required course in college to take, so others who have taken the course and have passed say they are really glad to get it over with rather than in college, where it is probably harder to pass. Should I try to get statistics over with by taking it in high school or go for calculus BC?

I don’t think Calculus BC is an entire class at all. Doesn’t your school give Calc BC in a way that combines it with Calc AB? BC is just a few more units. AP stats does not equal college stats in any way. When you take college stats it is usually in conjunction with a particular field of study because it is a tool. It is not basic math. It is applied math. It seems useless to take it out of the context of a field of study. I’d take AP calculus if you are a decent math student. If you aren’t a strong math student then it probably does not matter what you take. I’ve never heard of anyone substituting AP stats for a college stats requirement. It may pass as a math requirement if you don’t need to take college stats (that is, if the math requirement is very broad and general) but if stats is required for your particular major, I doubt AP stats will pass for it. Actually, I missed the line that says you are thinking of a career in biomedical engineering. if so, you should definitely take calc!

Actually, my school makes it so that I have to take Calculus AB before BC, so there is no way around just taking BC alone. Thanks for your input, though! I think I’ll take calc!

@lostaccount In my school, AB and BC are two separate classes. AB is the first half of the book and BC is the entire book. If you get a 4 or 5 on the AB exam then you don’t have to relearn anything from AB in BC, just review.

Statistics is a MUCH easier class and shouldn’t really count as math, since you can do it with Algebra 2 knowledge. However, it has many more real-world applications, and if you don’t take it in HS, I recommend taking it in college.

IMO if your field of interest is biomedical then calc AB in junior and stats in senior would be good. If you are very good at math you might as well try calc BC in junior. Either way it would make no (or very little) difference in your college admission.
