AP chem is hard!

My AP chem teacher is the worst teacher that I have ever had and I'm very worried about the test. I think I can get a 3 but I would hope for a 4. My teacher uses the old AP test scale with new questions and she grades very leniently so I have no idea what I will get on the actual test. We also haven't covered topics such as organic chemistry and molecular structures and the test is in one month! She has also left for a trip to India for two weeks and our sub is worse. I have a Kaplan prep book. Is it about the same difficulty as the actual test? Any other tips you could give me?

Organic chemistry and molecular structures are things you can teach yourself using a review book. I'm using Kaplan right now (even though I hear PR is better) and I think it is the same difficulty as the actual exam. I took a practice AP (1999) and got a 5 after reviewing a bit with the Kaplan. Good luck!

Chem is not hard at all... through independent study with no help whatsoever from anyone else I still got a 5 last year.

Organic chemistry is not that important for AP Chem test. You basically need to know some names, a few of them show up quite a bit, but most of the names that you are "supposed" to know never show up in the AP test. So don't worry.

how many questions on the multiple choice were Organic Chem-related, thzxcyl? And were there any O-chem-related things on any of the free-response?

Thanks

I didn't know there were O-Chem related questions

I didn't know there were O-Chem related questions

There are a few, but OC is not a major topic-only names and basic structures are needed (like knowing about benzene or the saturated hydrocarbons). Equilibrium, thermodynamics, and gas laws are far more important.

im terms of ap tests, use two review books or more :D

my chem teacher kicks butt cause she's from UCSD... :D

we didn't even use barrons!

we used old practice ap tests tho....

where did your teacher get hold of ap tests? mine only has a couple from way back, and i hear that collegeboard is being anal about distribution of them. ('cause they're too lazy to make new questions....why are we paying 80 bucks again?)

my teacher kicks butt :P sorry had to do say it again !

My teachers just order them from AP Central at $15/copy. We have a copy of every released AP exam since inception in all AP subjects taught in school.

I have some questions:

1) When did you start reviewing for the exam? (If you didn't review, I don't want to know, because I know I really really really need the review.)

2) Do the "essay" problems involve cross-chapter knowledge?

3) What would you say appears the most in multiple choice?

4) Since we can't use calculators, are the multiple choice numbers really, really simple to work with?

5) Any advice on what book? I'm using Barron's currently, and it seems okay.

6) We never do any labs in class. Will that hurt me on the exam?

5) Barron's/ I also heard PR is works well. You still have a little over a month so you can get a good amount of review done

6) Yes it will hurt. I believe on the AP test, there always is a lab question where they ask you to write a lab...like write purpose, procedure, draw diagrams and produce mock data...and analyze data.

No o-chem in AP, eh? (well, no actual o-chem)

That's sad, we spent nearly a whole semester on it for Chem HL. O-chem is actually lots of fun when you get into it.

1) March 25
2) Yes
3) I can't answer that
4) At times; one has to ballpark where the numbers will end up
5) Barron's is one of the better books
6) One of the required questions is a lab experiment question, #5.
And OC is difficult and only fun when you get to do the labs with the chemicals.
Finally, there should be a separate IB forum.

chem isn't that hard. i'm selfstudying it, and am using barron's plus 2 textbooks (brown-lemay and 3rd ed zumdahl) that the school lend me.

for multiple choice that involve calculations, you might want to do unit analysis (if possible) and eliminate choices like that.

Is anyone using Chang? How do you like it? And the workbook that comes with it?

Is it true that you don't have to get many of the questions right for a 5? I heard its possible with only 60% right

My sister used Barron's to review and got 5 on the AP. She also used Barron's for sat2 but I forget her score (790?)

For past AP chem people:

In free response, are you required to show the units accompanying your work? If you do show your units and do some wrong cancellations, do you get some points for work?
