AP Chem without regular chem

Im a sophomore taking AP bio. I was wondering, is it too crazy to jump straight into AP chem next year, without a prior year of chemistry? I skipped pre calc, and taught myself all of it the first school week of my sophomore year, so that I could stay in Calc AB. calculus is incredibly easy for me, especially since i really like math. I also really enjoy challenging myself. Would it be crazy to dive straight in?

Yes. It seems like you’re up to challenges, so it wouldn’t be a horrible idea if you took a chemistry course online over the summer. You really want to master the basics before jumping in.

It is doable, but it will be more time consuming. Khan Academy videos and a prep book would be useful. An online course if you have time would benefit you as well.

Go For It!

At my school, you are required to take Honors Chemistry (you can take 3 years of chem, chem II and organic and still won’t get in) to get into AP Chemistry, and even then you can still be denied entrance. But how hard AP Chemistry is depends on the school and teacher and you personally. If you went to my school you would’t be allowed to do it, but your school and teacher are clearly different. AP Chemistry is also a prerequisite to AP Biology in my school, so you may already know what you need to know to get it.

I did it and survived. I didn’t do quite as well as I probably would have but I will still end up with a low A.

Thanks! I think I might take a course online over the summer
