So I am really set on becoming a doctor, and have been since i was in middle school. I am a sophomore now and i just got my course selection card for next year. I really wasn't planning on it coming this early. My school has block schedule (4 different classes each semester) and i JUST started Chemistry Honors since the second semester just started.

Next year I am taking pre-cal, AP Eng Lang, AP Bio, APUSH, and a couple electives. But i have room for another AP class and i really want to do AP Chemistry but i dont know if I even like chemistry yet! Also everyone who is in it now says its really difficult because it is crammed into one semester. Only one person has an A. I have not gotten a B in high school ever and dont plan on it because i dont want to lose my ranking of 16 out of 500 students.

So my question is should i take it? Is it really that difficult in one semester? Would it be especially difficult taking it alongside AP Bio?

I had the same question and taking AP Chemistry with AP Biology is doable, but it’s hard work. I wanted to take AP Chemistry too, and I’m in Honors Chemistry now also. At my school, AP Chemistry is a year-long course along with AP Biology. AP Chemistry is math and concept oriented. Not as much as AP Physics though. You need to have a strong foundation in Algebra II and get at least a B in Chemistry Honors. To save your GPA and your life lol, I would take AP Chemistry Senior year. That’s what I plan on doing. My friend she’s a senior and said that taking AP Chemistry as a Senior is much more doable, and there’s less stress. You look like you have enough APs already, you don’t want to over do it. In the end it’s your choice. I didn’t know if Chemistry was right for me either, because I’m still fresh in Chemistry. In the end it’s all up to you. Good Luck.

Take it only because you’re passionate about it. Colleges don’t want to see you stuffing your course load with a bunch of APs so it’ll impress them; they want to see your commitment, passion, and success in APs.

AP Chem is REALLY hard. Unless you’ve always excelled in science (particularly ones revolving around chemistry), do not take it. Considering how many other advanced classes you’re taking, only take AP Chem if you can ensure success. I’ve taken APUSH and AP English and they’re both incredibly time intensive and very demanding courses. And AP Chem makes them look like a cakewalk.

AP chem is not too hard but this is coming from a year long course perspective. I don’t know why your school is cramming it into one semester because it really is a LOT of concepts. The math is easy peasy but really the concepts can be so mind-boggling, they’ll daze you sometimes. It’s better you take it senior year or don’t expect to get above a B or a 4.

Thanks everyone. I decided I am going to wait until senior year to take AP Chemistry because right now I’m not very passionate about chemistry honors, and if do end up loving it i’ll just switch classes next year.

But most likely I am either going to do AP Psychology or AP Statistics to fill in that last slot. I’m not sure which one though… I have heard both are a lot of work and difficult, but I am interested in doing one or the other.

Good choice on not taking chem I’m in it right now and I’m on the edge between struggling and kinda understanding (on a block schedule)

I don’t know where you go to school but psych and stats at my school are honestly ridiculously easy I think psych might be the easiest of all the ap classes
