AP Chemistry vs. AP Environmental Science

I am going to be a senior next year, and I feel a need to take an AP Science course since I am interested in science. I have already taken Bio, Honors Chem, and am in AP Physics B. I don't want to kill myself next year by taking AP Bio, or AP Physics C. So basically my options are AP Chem and AP Environmental Science. I signed up for APES next year (I can still change this though), and apparently it's a complete joke, you don't get much work, etc. However, I think APES might not be very useful and might not look as good for college. I would like a semi-relaxing senior year after what I've gone through junior year, and I'm already taking AP Calc AB and AP Psych. However, I feel that AP Chem would look better and be more challenging for me (which might be good, since I enjoy science.) I am pretty interested in Chem and I did really well in Honors Chem sophomore year (A- 1st sem, A 2nd sem.) It might also be better suited for my career, as I may major in engineering. However, I took the AP Chem test as a sophomore even though I was in Honors Chem at the time, and I got a 3. So would it be smart to take it despite my 3 on the AP test, and since it would be more difficult than APES? In addition, both the stuff I studied in Honors Chem, along with what I self-studied in preparation for the AP Chem test that I took sophomore year may have covered the majority of the AP Chem curriculum already, so a lot of the material in the class I may have already covered. However, I didn't really understand most of the chapters I had to self-study for the AP exam that much, so taking the class would really solidify my knowledge of Chemistry.

Side note: I know AP Physics C would be ideal for an engineering student, but I heard it's really hard and I might not do well in it or I might have to stress over it more than I would have to otherwise.

In my opinion, you need to do AP Chemistry. AP ES is a rather useless AP class and I don’t really know why it is even a class. While Chemistry would definitely benefit you in college and will look better on your transcript. I do feel that AP Chem is harder and more challenging than AP ES. I think you will be able to handle AP Chem with your other AP’s. Psychology is rather easy but Calc will definitely be demanding.

So all in all, go for it! :)

Could you possibly help me with my AP Physics B ordeal?

Thanks! :)

AP Environmental isn’t a useless class. I happen to take AP Environmental Science and AP Biology my Junior year. If you like Chemistry over Environmental science then take it.

I’m pretty sure AP Environmental Science is a useless class, Vesperia. AP Chemistry trumps AP Environmental Science in rigor and appeal. It’s also way more interesting.

^ I totally agree!

Academically, it DOES look better to take AP Chem than AP Enviro. However, if you want to explore APES in college/major, and want a relaxing senior year, go with APES. If you want hard-core sciences (bio/premed/engineering) in college …AP Chem is best.

I understand all that, but you have to understand that just taking an AP class to appeal to admission offices shouldn’t be a main goal. I love both Chemistry and Environmental science. Some of my friends are really interested in Environmental science and won’t take it because people like you all say “It’s useless”, “Boring” and “not rigorous”. Say if you like Psychology and want to take AP Psychology but it doesn’t “look good” according to some people and you end up taking AP Physics and fail the class. Like I said in my other statement, if you like Chemistry go ahead and take it.

I am taking APES, AP Biology and AP Psych all in sophomore year. The thing is, I love science so much! I will take any science course I can get my hands on. But if I had to choose, I would choose AP Chemistry (which I can’t take until junior year). It is more rigorous, which I like. APES is an AP no matter what, but it is merely common sense to the natural scientist, no brain power you know? However, if you want to major in community health or evironmental science, TAKE IT! all about your interests

Also, a plus of taking APES would be another AP test to my resume, rather than having 2 AP Chemistry scores and having only one score of those two that counts.

Definitely AP Chem!
APES is considered a joke class… at least in my school.

Guys, if you didn’t read that long paragraph I typed at the top, keep in mind that I already technically have AP credit (got a 3 on the test) for AP Chem from taking the AP test sophomore year without taking AP Chem. This kinda makes me hesitant to take AP Chem since I’m not sure that improving my score would be as valuable as another AP score altogether. Thanks guys for all your input though.

AP physics C is pretty easy after you’ve done B.

bumping this thread for more input

Im taking APES right now in my sophomore year and I hate it. Its boring as hell but there is no homework and only classwork…Pointless class and I think colleges would also like chem better

At my school, APES is a LOT of work. It’s hard to get a B. (Which I have :D; this is the only time I’m happy about a B.)The teacher uses ALL previous AP questions, and grades the essay questions on the test like an AP grader does. I’ve spent up to 8 hours on homework for just that class. It’s not a joke like everyone else is suggesting. However, the concepts aren’t difficult to master; it’s just a lot of memorization and work.

I haven’t taken AP Chem, but I have friends who have. It’s not too bad if you’re good at chemistry. However, if you’re not very strong in chemistry, don’t take it.

APES is much more of an interesting class, you learn a lot of fun facts about the world that most people don’t know, such as only 14% of the gasoline you put in your car actually keeps it moving. I know from my friends that AP Chem is much more challenging considering it’s basically all math, but I see your arguement about it being more helpful.

I vote, if you want an interesting class, a not super-difficult senior year, and you’re not majoring in anything super chemistry related, take APES.

If you like learning about oil and sustainable shower heads, take apes. I would rather take chem because its interesting. Its better to take a class you like which you would probably do better in compared to somthing boring.

Okay, I need help. I am going to be a junior next fall, and I need to decide my classes for junior year.
I am taking AP US history.
I’m not not sure whether to take AP Calc AB or BC!
Also, I am not sure whether to take AP Chem or AP Environmental Science.
Would AP Stats be good junior year also?
