AP Chemistry without prior Experience

I’m currently a freshman in high school and I just forecasted for AP chemistry. I signed up because my counselor suggested me to. These would be the courses I would take along with ap Chem… Is this possible…ap chemistry without prior experience

AP Chemistry
Honors English
Advanced Algebra/Trig/Precalculus
Spanish 2
AP World History
Engineering Design

This would be my sophomore year schedule

Many people will recommend not taking it without a prior chemistry class. Juniors and seniors struggle and the class definitely won’t be easy, but it is possible. My friend is a sophomore in AP Chem and has the highest grade in her class, so it’s not impossible. However, you should take other classes into consideration too. There’s nothing wrong with taking it Juniod Year. You’ll struggle greatly without any experience so you might want to get the basics of chemistry down over the summer and learn the periodic table. Good luckN!

I am taking a dual enrollment chemistry class with no prior experience whatsoever with chemistry (i even skipped physical science in elementary school due to switching chools). If the teacher is good, take AP chem. If you know the teacher is terrible, don’t take the class or wait another year. I found chemistry to be different form many other subjects as it is not simply math nor is it simply theory. If someone can’t explain these things to you even the internet doesn’t always help. Best of Luck.

If your school has suggested you take it, the course will probably cover the basic foundations you’ll need, albeit at depth at a fast pace. If you’re prepared for a challenge, I don’t see why you wouldn’t take it. Anish gave a good suggestion-- you would likely find it helpful to learn some of the basics over the summer to help develop a sense of how the puzzle pieces of the subject fit together.

I’m taking it right now without any prior Chem. It’s not been easy but it is doable. I had to do a lot of extra studying first semester but it wouldn’t have been so bad if I hadn’t combined it with AP Calc, AP Language and AP Lit. I think I will end the year with a 94 or so, for whatever that’s worth.

@pseudoprimal‌ Well, I’ve talked to the AP Chem teacher, and he told me not to even consider the course until I’ve taken regular chemistry (my school doesn’t offer honors). So, I may change it to regular chemistry.

You could do regular chem over the summer or a class at a community college in order to prepare you for AP Chem. Just a suggestion.

AP chem supposes you took Chemistry before, like Algebra 2 supposes you took Algebra 1. So, take Chemistry next year and AP Chem junior year.

Thanks!
