I was wondering at what level of Chinese do you really need to do well on the AP exam. I am wondering because the AP Chinese Exam is relatively new. The highest I can get in High School is Chinese 3. Is that enough, or will I have to self-study in order to prepare for the AP Exam?

Not sure what level Chinese 3 is, but you should self-study if you are not a native speaker since the curve will be high. If you are a native speaker,it would be like the stuff you learn in 3th~5th grade. You should know how to type Chinese at least and have those holidays and traditions memorized. The hardest part for me was speaking to the computer...I always ran out of things to say to that machine. Also, I was not very successful at the explaining 成语 part. I understood what it meant, but couldn't remember the related story of its origin, so I just made it up...don't know if it worked. Anyway, just self-study till you are really really confident. It's not gonna hurt you~~^_^

i took the chinese AP this past may as a freshman with NO self studying, i only dared to do so because i speak chinese fluently at home w/ azn parents. i'm not sure what Chinese 3 is but if it's the highest, then you should be good. the test is basically a lot of reading, then speaking it. oh and listening comes first but that's the easy part. just be able to pick up a random newspaper in chinese and be able to understand what it's about.
