Possibility of self-studying AP Chinese and passing

I speak fluent mandarin and use it on a daily basis. I speak to my parents only in mandarin (though it might be a little "casual").

However, I'm illiterate when it comes to reading/writing Chinese. I can recognize a few characters here and there but that's about it.

Do you guys think it's possible for me to prepare for the AP Chinese test by myself and get a 3? I want to satisfy the foreign language requirement for college.

If so, what prep book or textbook should I get?

oh I also took a basic course for chinese in the local community college (didn't help much) and took Chinese lessons as a kid (forgot most of what I learned)...So i know basics and pinyin

While there isn’t a released curve, the pass rates for non-native speakers is about 85%. So, with fluency in speaking and listening (I’m assuming you can understand spoken Chinese) and a few months of preparation for reading/writing/culture, you should be OK.
