AP classes for the top schools

Hi, I was wondering about the number of APs a student who wishes to go to the Ivy League or a top school like MIT or Caltech. I am a sophomore and also have IB track classes so my schedule isn’t flexible, but what do think would be a good number for AP classes. Also, I will attempt to take a few AP exams based on my IB classes, so how many AP classes do you believe would be a good number?

Depends on your HS. If it offers zero APs, then you’re not expected to take any AP classes, although you can certainly sign up for an AP exam if you feel ready. If your school has a lot of APs, then I’d go for as many as you can without over-burdening yourself or taking classes you have zero interest in.

It depends. I took two, and I got into Northwestern. Some people took 12, and got rejected by every elite college. It’s all about relativity. You should be taking what is deemed rigorous compared to the rest of your classmates.

Thank you! @CaliCash and @MITer94
