Ap classes not available// Honors , Aps?

I truly wanted to take about 3-4 Ap classes this semester, but i talked to my counselor and he said that i could only take one because all the others were full or could not fit into my schedule. I was very frustrated but, all the aps were either durind some of my actual classes that i could not change or they were only available during a period that I had already an important class. In short, i was only able to get one of the aps that i wanted ( ap gov't), however my counselor put me in two honors class. Are honors much different from Aps? and is the grade weighted?
If someone has any suggestion , it would be great

Also, i , as a last resort, asked my counselor if i could take the ap test even if i do not take the class and he said that i couldn't. I have heard numerous people saying that you can take the test without the class, so this really confused me. Is he right or should i be able to take the test ( aP) even though i did not take the corresponding ap class?

Thank you and please answer as soon as possible

Honors isn't as difficult as AP, but it's harder than a typical class. Generally they are weighted.

You CAN take the AP without the class, but you most likely will not cover all the material on the test in a regular or honors class. So he may have been referring to that. If you want to do work outside of class and supplement it you should be able to take the AP test. (Although the feasibility of that depends on the class; some are harder than others.)

so, if i study the ap books own my own and get acquainted with the advanced material that an ap class hsould cover, can i take the ap test? How would i register/or sign up for the test? Would i have to go online to collegeboard.com or talt to someone at my school?

yes, you can take the AP test.

This College Board site says to talk to your AP Coordinator (in other words, whoever makes arrangements for the exams).

My guidance counselor assured me that i could not take the ap exam if i did not take the ap class for that subject, so i was very frustrated since i could not take the ap that i wanted and since i know that i am able to get a 5 on the test if i prepare myself. I guess i will have to talk with someone else to ensure that i can really take it then...

Print out the College Board website and bring it to your guidance counselor, and see what he says.

great idea, i will certainly do it.

Yes, i am certain that it is much better to take the ap exam when you have actually taken the class. But, i am current a senior so this is my last chance to take as many ap exams as possible. If you guys are right--and i can take the ap exam without the actual ap class, then i will probably take the ap chemistry exam towards the end of the year. i know it will be a lot tougher , but i know that i can score at least a 4 by preparing and studying and memorizing concepts and etc from the ap books available. Last semester, i was determined to take the sat II bio, but i was taking regular bio 1(first of 2 semesters) at the time. Nevertheless, i studied the whole content of the entire next semester by myself over the course of the last three months. Surely, enough i got an 800 on the test; this is what leads me to think that i can do the same with ap chemistry.

My guidance tried to help me as much as he could, it is just that the school is really not flexible; they only had ap classes for science during periods 3 and i could not change my current 3rd period class. In addition, the staff is really disaproving and indifferent sometimes ( i had to wait two days just to get permission to contact my counselor). I even wanted to stay a semester longer since i will be in school for 7 semesters by the time i graduate, but nothing seemed to work out. I just couldn't manage to integrate the ap classes i wanted in my schedule.

Your couselor's response sounds like the same response I would get from mine, and I am a sophomore.

But yes, I have also heard many times that you CAN self study AP tests, and then take them in May. But there is also an issue if your school puts it on your transcript, not sure there.

Maybe your counselor is telling you no because he doesn't want you to overload? I personally hate that, because you know you can do it, but others think you can't and instead lie to you so you dont do it. I dont know if thats the case, but do what applejacksoup suggested and post your guidence's response.

Be persistant is key, you know you want to do it, you know you can, so tell them. Just make sure you can handle 5 AP's ;) its not that easy, but your a senior, so I dont know.

Plus, honors is better then the average class, in our school honors class is on level 3 out of 5 levels, 5 being AP.

at my school, they will only let you self study for exams that the school does not offer. (for example, because we offer AP french you cannot take regular french and the AP exam, but you could take the AP econ exam because we don't have that class).

in situations like yours, arrange to take the exam at another nearby school. i have several friends who took their ACT, SATII's and several AP exams at the "other" high school.

Renin Detroit,

Is it guaranteed that i will be able to take the ap at another school? I willing to do that if it is not possible to take at my school since they offer ap chemistry ( the ap test i want to self study). Anyways, i guess self studying fo the ap exam will be helpful considering that i intend to take the sat II chemistry and will help me with my honors chemistry class. Does anyone knowa good ap chemistry prep book?

thank you in advance.

it's not guaranteed, but i think that if you contact the AP counselor there they will be more than happy to take care of it for you.
