AP Classes not offered until junior year. How would that affect me?

I’m currently a freshman but I am definitely going to take AP courses when they are available to me but the thing is, these courses don’t start until junior year at my school even though they usually start sophomore year at most schools. I know colleges are rather holistic when it comes to this kind of stuff but still, could this possibly affect me?

I don’t think you should worry. College admissions people have to deal with so many different high schools, both public and private and international and home school. I have always heard that they look at what your school offers and whether you challenged yourself with what was offered at your school. I will never forget meeting a young lady on a plane that had gone to a very challenging private high school in CA and took one AP (Calc BC) and guess where she was going? Stanford. Take APs that interest you and find something that you love to put your time into.

It’s not unusual, don’t worry about it.

You should be happy - you will not get penalized in the applicant process since they are not available and you can stay out of the AP rat race and focus on doing well in your standard or honors courses.

Agree, it won’t impact you at all. The top tier colleges want to see that you have taken the most rigorous schedule available at your HS – they don’t expect you to take courses that are not offered. College admissions is NOT about a a race to see who has the most AP classes. Keep in mind that some schools (including some top prep schools and public schools) don’t offer any AP classes.

My eldest took zero her freshman year and one sophomore year. I do not believe it was a problem whatsoever. She only took the AP’s In subjects that interestsd her and not what she thought adcoms wanted. Took online onlevel world history as she hated the subject over the summer to make it more palatable. Many kids do poorly in human geography and world history because they take it to look good for college since there are few AP’s offered to freshman and sophomores. If you are not interested in the subject avoid the AP class. If you are taking it solely to increase your AP count you shouldn’t be taking it. People don’t excel or love every subject. Know your strengths and weaknesses and use that as a guide to choose classes. Hence, taking none in your first two years of high school is no big deal.
