I'm approaching my last year of high school and I'm really uncertain about what classes I should take... I know orchestra all four years shows commitment and looks good, and I really wouldn't mind staying in it. But I'm not extremely dedicated to it either. There's more AP classes I can take, which have multipiers and could boost my rank.
How bad would it be if colleges saw that I dropped out of Orchestra the last year of high school? I dont want to seem like a non-committed ditcher. Should I quit?

I was in your same situation. Dropped concert band after Jr year. I took the more AP route . Never regretted it. Didn’t hurt me in admissions either. Good luck

Thank you so much.
Do you mind if I ask what college you’re in? Just curious.

T26E4 already graduated from college. Was it Dartmouth?

Anyway, I took orchestra from 9th through 11th (technically 6th through 11th) and dropped it senior year. I was also first chair of my orchestra during my sophomore and junior years, so it wasn’t really a dedication/motivation issue.

I was a also concerned about college’s interpretation of commitment, but I wanted to take additional AP science courses this year. My greatest interest is in the sciences, and it’s also a plus to not have a class that automatically brings down my GPA due to weighting (although it’s a little late for that). Additionally, it’s nice to not have my schedule get screwed up by mandatory rehearsals and concerts hah.

Essentially, I think you should take challenging classes that you WANT to be in. If you’re not really dedicated to orchestra and still want to take some additional AP classes, then go ahead and do that.

Yes, from the standpoint of college admissions, the AP route would be better. However, I don’t recommend doing things from the standpoint of college admissions.

I dropped my instrument (which I had been playing since 8 yrs old) because I sincerely wanted the fuller academic offerings my Senior year. Something had to give on my schedule and it was Concert Band. Make that choice if you truly would enjoy the AP class.

And no, while DMouth is a great school, it’s not my alma mater.
