I'm a rising junior and I signed up for four APs this year.
AP Lang
AP Stats
AP Bio
AP World
Our school works on the trimester system and I only got 3 of the four. I didn't get AP World. Instead I got Anatomy and Physiology and Forensic Science. I was pretty devastated. The other classes I am taking this year are:
Medical Skills Field Study and Terminology (We go to the hospital)
French 4
Honors Physics
* I'm also planning on Dual Enrolling for Calculus 3/Multivariable.
Last year I took AP Calc BC and AP US History. I got As in all my trimesters and got a 4 on APUSH and a 5 on Calc.
As I want to go into the Medical Field will only 3 APs junior year look bad? And do colleges want to see Social Studies in junior year? Should I try and switch Stats with World? And maybe try and squeeze Psych in my schedule too? Say I only can take 3 APs (probably the case) and I take Lang and Bio for sure, what is my best bet for the third AP?
Sorry for all the questions but advice would be highly appreciated!

Help me please!!! I really need an answer soon…

Bump…Bump…bump

My D took AP history in her junior year. It allowed her not to take history in college. Those science classes demonstrate your interest in science. My D did not even take physics in high school but took anatomy and got college credit for it while in high school. Yale, Princeton, Rutgers and many of the BA/MD programs had no problem when I called 4 years ago about her skipping physics since her schedule was rigorous.

The number of AP’s does two things. First it allows you to get college credits at many schools except most ivies where it bumps you up to higher level and harder courses. Second, the number is not important but your guidance counselor should be able to write that you took a very rigorous course of study at your school.

The ivies love research and Siemens science. If you want the BA/MD programs shadow doctors and build up those kinds of ec’s. Just keep doing the best you can.

Thanks a lot for your help. I don’t really think I’m IVY League material. I’m mainly aiming for UofM and maybe Wayne State MedStart.

Is your goal to apply for combined programs? If not, it really does not matter which specific APs you take in high school.

What do you mean by combined programs? I’m planning on going to Med School.

It is not the same thing as applying to combined programs. These would be ones admitting you to BS and MD when you apply in senior year.

Oh is it like starting med school as soon as you go to college? Yea I want to do that if I get the chance… so what do I have to do?

BS/MD program is one where you are admitted to both BS and MD upfront and you have to meet certain criteria during BS to retain your MD seat.

You don’t start med school right at the beginning of the college.

If someone wants to apply to these programs, they have a different focus (read raycmr’s post).

If you just want to start college as a premed, there is absolutely no requirement to do specific APs.

Ok so now I’m taking 3 APs: world, bio, and Lang. Is that good enough for my junior year? I am extremely busy with other activities as well.

As long as your guidance counselor will say you had a rigorous schedule. Anat and Physio in many states can count as college credits if you pay a local college and take their exam for the final. It is hard since you must learn every muscles’ connection and insertion points , however.

My D did not have to take World since she had AP history and that satisfied the social studies requirement to graduate. In the big scheme of things the number of APs isn’t important, it is that you had a full schedule with rigor and did not slack off. World will make it easier to keep up your A average which is important. Good luck.

I just got a 75 on my first AP Bio quiz!!! Help what should I do?

Chill. I got a 72 on my first Calc quiz (without curve though). Will your teacher let you drop your lowest grade? Many do. But even if s/he doesn’t, it’s not that big of a deal. I assure you that many other people will be failing the quiz because they forgot everything over the summer.

Dont panic and Just double down on your efforts. My D purchased the Kaplan AP review book for each AP course at the BEGINNING of the year not the end. She would use it in conjunction with her textbook. She did that for all her AP’s. She would also ask questions in depth after school since the teacher stayed for 30 minutes everyday.

Even if you get a 5 on the AP test, all colleges are going to make you take Bio anyway so you won’t place out. Many students take the gen bio not advanced to try to get an easy A to build up their GPA. It is good you took World since Anatomy would have overwhelmed you at this point.

I am taking Anatomy but it isn’t that bad. I just don’t want my 4.0 to be ruined. This is supposed to be the easiest quiz in bio and I did so bad. It wasn’t like I didn’t study I just made many stupid mistakes because I was so nervous.
